I have a stock 99' F-350. I am a low-tech kinda guy and don't want to fuss with reprogramming all the time. I drive 70% city and 30% on the hwy. I pull 15,000# +/- trailers moving from one job to another a few times a month. What would be the best type of performance chip for my truck. I want the grunt when I need it, I want the smoother drive when empty, and I want it to be simple. What do you all recommend?
Thanks,
Damon
get a flip chip you can go from a stock setting to a tow setting(+40-60hp) to a econ setting (+50-75 hp) to a high out put setting (+80-125 hp) at the click of a switch. that is all i have had on my truck and i could not imagine having to reprogram my truck everytime i wanted to change settings.
have you concitered a programable tuner? like a superchips tuner, or diablo? if your a low tech guy.. then this might be the easyest sollution.... i think there is a "tow safe" mode on it giving u like 30hp and 50 lb tq...(not 100% sure... check out their site for details) .... and from what i have heard... their farely simple to use... u said that u don't want to be re-programing all the time... u could just leave it in that mode if you wanted to... or the performance tow mode i think... hope this helps some!
What brand of flip-chip should I use? Adjustable power/econ at the push of a button is exactly what I had in mind. What should I look to spend on it? Who has the best? Are there any followup hidden problems like exhaust flow that I will need to account for or can I just plug it in and rally?
the one i have right now is from a company called western diesel, which has since gone out of business. if i had to buy one right now i would lean towards a bully dog or ATS, what a minute i think ATS went out of business also. there are some other smaller companies that i have heard make some very good products(jody tipton, DP, ITP) but since i am not in the market i have not been doing any reasearch on it

W-D is not all the way gone, a company called turbobrake.com bought them and carries most of the W-D product line.

Definitely. You absolutely should not ever tow 15,000 pounds with a chipped truck that does not have gauges. As a bare minimum you should install a pyrometer to monitor the exhaust gas temperature, and if you plan on having one of the more extreme settings you should probably plan on upgrading the intake and exhaust to make the power more user friendly.

Yep, a must do if you want to play with power. It'll cost a little more than a chip right now, but it will keep you from burning up your engine in the long run. And it will make your engine run so much better!
I got my flip chip from Diesel Innovations, pretty descent price for what I got, I think. Give them a look, they are a good company to work with, gotten a few things from them and am thoroughly impressed with their service!!
