Rear Interchange?

I have an 87 F150 which I've stiffened the springs for more load capacity. Has anyone ever put an F250 rear from a similar year 80-96 in one of these 150's? What's involved? Thanks

ive seen it done, and i do belive it just bolts right in, the only thing that might be diffrent is the driveshaft, but baby not, it shows the axle taking the same universal joints so it probly bolts right in. its the same width, same brake lines, the only diffrence would be maby gears, so youd have to get one with the same gears or change them, but the stearling 10.25, (i think thats the 3/4ton axle) is eight lug. so youd have to have 8 lug wheels. and ive seen it done a couple times, but dont remember what he did in the front.

This is my old towing/pulling rig. I've done all I need for pulling trailers radiator, rebuilt trans, tranny cooler, extra leaves, etc. I'd like to get the 8 lug under it to get the much stronger 10 ply radials. Not really worried about the front unless I find a really cheap parts truck. I have two vans for parts from late 80's early 90's. I'm not sure if the rears or Ibeams are the same as a pickup. I guess I should have asked that?!?!? Thank you for your help!!!

they should bolt right in i would think if there e-250's seeing how they have the same frame (sorta) but other than that you should be good to go. with some new u-bolts and such. i do belive they probly even have the sensor in the rear end too, wich is a plus.

Vans and pickups have different frame widths so the spring and shock mounts are in different places on the axles. The vans also usually use Dana axles and the pickups use Ford/Visteon axles, not that there's anything wrong with a Dana axle. The overall axle width may not be the same between the vans and pickups either, not sure on that one.

I would stick with a pickup axle to keep the swap as simple as possible.

How much stronger is the 9" in load carrying than the 8.8? I have an 86 with a 9 inch that should bolt right in. They're both semi floating so I don't know if there's much difference?

There's not a whole lot of difference, really. The axle is not going to be the weak point of the truck. The downside to the 8.8" is the c-clip holding each axle in place. If you break a shaft, the wheel will fall off along with the drum and outer half of the axle shaft. There are c-clip eliminator clips, though. The 9" doesn't have the hookup for rear ABS, though.

I don't know that the ABS works anymore. I'll keep an eye out for an F250 rear. I have one I'm trying to decipher the #'s on, just not having any luck finding info. Maybe if it's not raining this weekend I'll be crawling around under things measuring. Thanks again
