who tows what with a 5.4 f150 i think they are a little gutless towing maybe i am doing something wrong i have a superchips programmer too but i dont use it on tow mode do you have to tow with o/d off??
I towed my wife's Liberty so we could both have a car on vacation. Trailer + Jeep = 6,000 lbs. Had about 300 miles to tow, truck was far from gutless. I was very impressed, maintained 65-70 mph level or uphill.
Tow a boat weighs in more than 7500lbs, tows great, better then my Expedition ever did. I have the Lariat Screw 5.4 3:73LS 2wd, rated at 9500lbs tow capacity.
What are you towing, weight, and what is your gear ratio?
I have the 5.4 supercab and I tow a 21ft. toyhauler-6000 dry weight plus 2 quads, water, etc. Does fine on flat ground, on a 7% grade I can keep it at about 40mph with the pedal pegged.
I tow a 2004 baja 29 outlaw with twin 496mags on a triple axel trailer that weighs in about 8500lbs dry. My 2004 lariat 2wd 3.73 LS 5.4 screw tows it pretty good it huffs a little but i can spin down the road at 75mph with no sag or sway whatso ever. But iam thinking about a 05 F250 lariat V10 with 4.10's though
I tow my 25' travel trailer with a std. cab 5.4 w/3.73 and it really snaps it around. I never tow with OD on. I think you will be much happier if you turn OD off when you tow and you won't notice any drop in fuel economy.
I just replaced my old F250 with a new F150 with the 5.4L & towing package. The heaviest I've towed is 8600lbs (trailer + car). It was slow taking off but would hold 80 on the interstate; gas mileage was terrible compared to the old PSD, 165 miles to a tank. Trailer was pulled with O/D off the entire time and truck was bone stock.
Okay-here are my numbers for my 04 F150 ext cab 2WD w/ the tow package....
GVWR=7050
Front GAWR=3600
Rear GAWR=3800
Wheel base is 145
Axle is H9 (what does that mean??? Does that mean I have the limited slip differential? Or does that mean it is the 3:55 or the 3:73? I have no idea.....)
I think my truck weighs 5220 or 5330 lbs, if I remember correctly....
I tow a 2 horse aluminum skin bumper pull trailer weighing 3300 lbs
My animal weighs about 1100-1200 lbs
Tack and etc is 50 lbs.
I still want to know why it feels like it drags at times during towing and is very slow when I go from a red light to a green one???
I have just finished towing my car and trailer, about 5500 lbs this past weekend. I went a total of 210 miles. Truck averaged 11.5 mpg with 100 miles of 75 mph cruise, and 110 miles of state road travelling w/ stop lights every 4-5 miles on average. I recently went to 4.56s and it made a nice improvment. I can lug in OD now at 65 mph without any issues. Overall, I was not very impressed, but you can only expect so much out of a gasser. I sold my 04 F-350 6.0L for this truck. I had an edge module on it and WOW, it towed like a dream. If the truck didn't stay in OD something was wrong, even when passing! I LOVE diesel torque. My diesel would get about 13-14 mpg while towing the same load, and do it much smoother and faster. BUT again, major difference in the trucks. If I were doing a lot of towing of this weight on a normal basis, the F-150 would be gone for an 05 F-250 w/ a 6.0L again. I would still own my 6.0L had I just gotten a super cab, short bed instead of the long bed crew cab. U-turns and parking were just a tad bit of a problem

What is an edge module? What is a lot of towing to you? I tow on average only about 1-2, maybe 3 times a week (again, it is my 2 horse trailer with a dressing room). Also, is it better to tow with the OD off or on? I tow with it off.
The edge module was on the diesel. They don't use chips, only modules or programmers (03+ 6.0L that is) They add over 200 ft/lbs of torque....again, diesels RULE.
Your definition is towing a lot! I would consider anything over 4 times a month a lot, but only when it's over a reasonable distance, like over 20 miles at a time, and with considerable weight, like over 5000. With the stock 3.73s or 3.55s, I'd tow with O/D off up to about 70 mph, maybe 75 mph. The stock gears make it hard to tow a lot a weight in O/D at slower speeds. If you leave O/D on below 70 mph, the split second you need any acceleration or more power than a level cruise, it'll either unlock the converter or downshift into 3rd. If this is the case, leave O/D off so your tranny isn't constantly shifting just to maintain speed.
Not that I would head out the highway with this load, but I towed my buddy's 29ft Whaler Outrage over to the marina for him the other day. Loaded with fuel on the triple axle trailer the package probably weighed 11,500lbs.. I only towed it for 3 miles on deserted flat road. The trailer was ordered without brakes because this is as far as it will ever travel. Two bridges one about 75yds long with 30-35ft rise in the center. I was kind of worried about stopping that load on the down side of that bridge, but the brakes on the new 150 are not bad at all in fact they've got all the guts the brakes had on my old 84 F250HD... It really surprised me how much control I did have. 800lbs of tougne weight gets the Lariat Scab down about level... I used the 250 to tow boats back and forth to Fl and if I had to call it I'd say the new 150 is a safe truck with up to 7500lbs behind it at highway speeds, with working brakes on the trailer of course.
I've alway felt they rate all trucks way to high for safe towing. 9500lb and safe are not in the cards for these F150's. That just too much, plus I'm not impressed with this battle the manuf's are having with towing weights. A 150 is twice the truck that the Tundra is. Putting 9k behind one of those is a suicide wish. I think they are going to get people killed pushing the tow weights like they are....
