This is my first post but I have been reading for quite some time now. I must say that I haven't been this excited about learning since the first grade. I have an oil leak that leaks a few drops a night right on the steering bar beside the stabelizer shock. I can't tell if it is the front of the pan or not. It doesn't appear to be. I also read about it being the HPOP but I can't see any leaks there either. I have a 00" F250 7.3 with 85,000K. Anyone have any ideas?
If I have the right position identified it is probably just seepage from front main seal. My HPOP is toward back of motor so maybe your leak is not toward front? If not front then probably back seal. The 3 main normal seepage points for motors are the front seal, back seal, and covers/motor mating points. Sometimes I have gotten leaks from the dip stick holder where it mates. Locating is sometimes hard to do because of the effects of wind and gravity on the trail. Anyway I wouldn't worry about some drops here and there. They usually never get steadily worse unless there is an actual problem with faulty work; new or old pu. I have a seep from back seal or pan cover gasket.
Just keep an eye on the drops and/or oil level for a while. After some time, no worse, then let it go and think good thoughts! Know what you mean though, it is hard to not worry about those slight changes it your babies' manner.
I am sort of **** about oil leaks and like you said, this is my baby so when I noticed it, I got worried. I have been watching it for about a month and trying to pin point it.
It is engine oil, I am sure of that. I have cleaned the bottom of the pan and cannot see a leak there even though it seems to come straight down from there. Do you know of anything I can put in the oil prior to an oil change to help identify it such as a dye or something?
Check with a professional auto parts jobber like NAPA Auto Parts. They should have the dye or even a dye kit which includes a special light. Just tell them what you want it for and they will give you the right stuff.
