6x9" speakers can be fitted in the front doors with some modification of the speaker hole size (i.e. you have to cut metal). Also, be careful to note the depth of the speaker as it needs to clear the window inside the door.
5.25" speakers will require an adapter plate to fit the stock 6x8" opening. Also, they would not produce as much bass as a 6x8" speaker.
Oh ok, well thanks guys. I'm not much of a cutter so I think I'll just go with some kenwoods or something. If you recommend something else, that would be great, but otherwise, thank you for your time.
I think all Rangers & Mazda’s take 6” x 8” speakers front and back. The front can also take 6.5” but you can only attach two of the screws. You want the best speakers you can afford up front (component speaker set) because this will make the biggest difference in sound quality.
I installed my entire system and I have a 1996 B3000 extra cab.
Sony - head unit
Sony - Xplod 1100 watt D class amp
Sony - 4 x 20 multi channel amp (older amp)
Sony - crossover
Boston acoustic - speakers 5” x 7” (mounted in back) 6.5” mounted in front.
Rockford Fosgate - 800 watt 8” dual voice coil sub woofer.
Voodoo Audio - 1.2 farad capacitor
Voodoo Audio - terminal block.
FatMat - (sound deadening material) entire cab.
Monster cables - tie everything together.
I plan on replacing the multi channel amp and the front & rear speakers.
Up front 6.5” MB Quart component speakers. The rear will get a set of more powerful 6” x 8” or 5” x 7” speakers, and finally a Sound Steam multi channel amp. My current Boston speakers are not loud enough to work with my bass speaker. I purchased the amp and speakers years ago so the technology isn’t as good as the bass amp and speaker. Crutchfield offers kick panels for the Ranger so you may want to consider a set.
I just refitted my front doors with kenwood 6x9's and they worked great. they fit under the door pannel and in the existing hole. They don't completly sit flush in the hole but i added a few layers of dynamat under them to get a good seal. I kept 6x8's in the back but changed them over from the stock and added two 10" subs under the rear jump seats. the system sounds great. So yes 6x9's can be used.
