Front Crankshaft Seal

I have a 02 Ranger with a 4.0 that my wife drives. While I was changing the oil the other day, I noticed an oil leak at the front of the engine. Brought it into the dealer and found out it was the front seal, they fixed it under warrenty, the truck has 32,500 miles on it. Is this a common problem on Rangers? Im thinking that if it was a bad seal it would have shown up sooner. If it was`nt defective, what would cause it to leak with such low miles, or is it one of those things that just happens?
