I have a 99f250 with 7.3 120,000. Every now and then it seems like there is no turbo at low RPM and a big loss of power. I take it out of overdrive and give it a little accelerator and it goes away every time within a couple of seconds. It doesn't happen very often but I just don't want a bigger problem later I just bought it two months ago and have only put 2000 miles on so I don't know if I have a problem or not(my first diesel). One thing I do know is that I love it.
It sounds like it may be the normal operation of the exhaust backpressure valve. Is it cold where you are, and when this problem occurs is it with in the first few minutes of starting the engine?
I live in Wisconsin we have a cold day or two sometimes-30F. This problem doesn't always happen in the first couple min all the time but probably 60-70% of the time. One time I drove 30 miles got off on an exit and then it started but I did have the cruise set at 70mph real flat going. Do you build up carbon or something if it doesn't work to hard?
No, the exhaust backpressure vale is part of the cold ambient package. It is a butterfly valve placed downstream of the exhaust outlet of the turbocharger. It's function is to help the truck warm up faster. When it is closed it almost completely blocks off the exhaust flow, which would cause a serious lack of power if it closed while the truck was under way...it is supposed to open fully once the truck reaches operating temperatures, and you can also override it's operation with a quick stab of the throttle pedal.
Thanks for the info I'll give the quick stab a try the next time it happens after it's warmed up. It's a lot better than the four letter word that I traded in 99 (Chevy)
1/2 ton.
