I recently purchased a 97 E-150 V6 4.2L with over 100,000 miles. The van had been sitting for over a year and would not start. I got it going..changed plugs, added new fuel. It ran rough but nothing major, until I changed the oil. Then a lg metallic on metallic knocking started. Used 5w-30 as the book for this van says and a motorcraft filter. THought the oil might not be thick enough so I changed again to 10w-40, but the sound still there. Now it does go away after it warms up, but only if you push on the gas. Pulled each plug wire and the sound still there. DOes anyone have a thought on what this could be. Thanks
Welcome to the forum....but hold on tight. I see this is your first post...
have you tried asking "who's there?"
sorry, i just couldn't resist. Clizzio, you may have the infamous 97 4.2L hydrolock in it's early stages. Usually happens as the engine nears 100k, sometimes much earlier.
Check out www.leakingfords.com for more info. Also use the search option in this forum and read up about it, there are literally dozens upon dozens of threads regarding this issue. search things like "hydrolock", or even "another hydrolocked 4.2" was the title of one from not too long ago.
Basically, with the 97 4.2s, the intake gaskets are doodie and give in after awhile, allowing coolant to enter the block and hydrolock, sending your motor into a state of hell. This can be irrepairable in some cases, i'd look into it right away and change out those gaskets.
