1990 F250 trans problems

Hello all, Scored me a 1990 extended cab F250 Lariat today for 450 bucks, was doing the super test drive home with the 5.8 and the truck decided after we parked it that it didnt like reverse anymore. So after looking in the tech articles at the tranny spotters guide it shows it has a E40D. Being the rebuild on this tranny will be ungodly, could I snag a cheaper C6 or AOD/AODE and throw it in there?

Thumbs up a40d vs C-6

I have a C-6 in my 1989 F250 extended cab 4x$ 7.5 instead of the piece of $%@# A4OD(E). There is nothing to it as everyhting bolts right up to the 7.5. Of course, my C-6 will not bolt up to a 5.8 unless there is somesort of adapter out there that I don't know about. As far as hooking up to the transfer case is concerned, I would imagine that as long as the C_6 output shaft is the same length as your orifinal transmission, it should slide right into the trnasger case tunnel/

The e4od is an electronically controled tranny. In order to replace it with something else you would need to figure out how to get the different tranny to work with your computer. The computer in your truck is what tells your tranny when to shift and whatever else it needs. Somebody might sell an adaptor to fit the AOD in place of the e4od, I don't know. I am sure somebody has tried to stick a C6 into a newer truck, maybe you could try a search of the site and see if anyone has posted about it before.
