I have a '92 Ranger 2WD and the bracket that is riveted to the frame that supports the top of the coil spring has broken rendering the vehicle undrivable. I am thinking of replacing this bracket myself but am wondering what I may be getting myself into. Any suggestions on this and what might I use to relace the rivets.
I found the exact same thing on my 91 ranger while investigating my brake pedal going to the floor. The shock tower broke and snapped the brake line. It looks like a pretty major repair and I'm not sure where to even find a new part.
Got it done. New part cost $89 at dealer. By far the hardest part is breaking the bolt loose below the coil spring. Take the brake caliper off to allow the axel to drop far enough to remove the spring. Then use a disk grinder with a cut off wheel to grind off the rivets. Pop the old tower off with a pry bay bar and then grind the rivets flush with the frame. Knock them out of the frame with a punch and hammer and put the new tower on with bolts and nuts.
If you can't break the bolt loose below the spring you may be able to leave it if you can get the spring to spin off the upper mount. Then spin it on the new tower and bolt on the new tower.
This was not an easy job. It took me about 8 hours because of all the rust and frozen screws. Plan on a new shock being needed because the nut breaks off at removal.
