Who out there rides dirtbikes and what kind? I am looking to get a new bike. I havent had one in about 7 years and am thinking about the honda crf 450 but ive never ridden one of the new breed four strokes. Ive always raced 125 and 250 2 strokes and even had a cr 500 to play on. Any comments or personal thoughts about the 4 strokes would be great.
The new four strokes are great. they have open class power. I have a YZ426F, its a good bike. Go to www.thumpertalk.com You will learn everything you need to know there.
I have a yz250F, It was my first "real" dirtbike and I love it... could use a little more power though.. I've ridden the new YZ450 and I gotta say It's amazing the power that that bike had... Handled pretty nice too.. I think I'll trade in my 250F in the spring towards a new 450..
I have a yamaha tw200 and a yamaha yz80 (yz 80 for sale) the tw200 is cool because it has a 180 rear tire on it and it is road legal. its not too fast but it is fun to ride. AND for the yz80, it is faster than my dads kdx200 and my cousins yz250. it was bored .030 over and polished and ported. it also has a mikuni slide valve carburetor on it. It has to run on 110 octane racing fuel with a 30:1 synthetic race mix. I let my uncle ride it about 2 months ago, and he didn't beleive me that it was SCARY fast ( I usually don't think things are SCARY fast considering I come from a family of 9 second or under Pro Street Dragsters) so he turned down the road and cracked it wide open.... i could see the front tire above his head! he weighs prolly 210 so he's not small $1600 is all i need for it
from the beginning....rupp mini bike,yz 100,yz 125,rm250,my personal favorite the ktm 500,then to a yz 426.....i raced for a long time and ktms new bikes are far superior to all bikes...suspension,low,mid range deliv no body can touch
Been riding for 20 odd years, been motorcycle mechanic for 15 or so.
personal favorite is my Kawasaki KX500.
Best trail bike I ever rode was a kdx 200 with a pipe and minor carb rejetting.
Just a quick note on four stroke vs 2 stroke the new motocross four strokes are "EXTREMELY" maintenance intensive.
LOL.
Ranger74 & shanesf150 what is the maintenance procedure on the 4 strokes? I assumed they would be less maintenance than a 2 stroke other than oil and filter changes.
The big thing with the four strokes is to keep an eye on the valve adjustment, and keep the oil clean. the top ends last a long time. Each brand has its own specific things to watch out for, but as for my YZ thats about it. Except for all the other things that you have to maintain on a bike, two or four stroke.
Yamaha XT225, great bike. Had it for 2 years now and wouldnt want to trade it in. More then enough power, has an awesome powerband, but will rev to the sky. Gets 75-80mpg so it is a great altentative if you want to save gas. It is completley street legal and goes about 85 maxed out. There hasant been one situation where I couldnt get though with the old XT. Its been to hell and back, flipped down hills, submerged underwater, reareneded by anther bike, hit a cow with it once trying to chase cattle away. Its never let me down and the eletric start is really nice.

There is quite a difference between the YZ 400-426-450 and the CR450F and the older model 4 strokes like XR's of any size, XT's ditto, and even the DR400's from Suzuki. These new motocross bred 4 strokes are extremely high performance engines. The piston in the Honda is top, two rings, the wrist pin and very little skirt. Not sure if they put 3 rings on the "enduro" model.
They run much higer rpm than the older ones as well.
If you want a racer, these are the way to go. If you want a trail bike or play bike, consider the older designs. They need valve adjustments and clean oil too, but are much less frantic than their new cousins.
I use my 250F for mostly trail riding and the occasional Hare scramble and I haven't had any problems with it....none. the only thing I really do to it is change the oil as soon as it starts to get dirty and clean the air filter every few rides. I usually end up changing the oil every other time I clean the air filter. other than that I've done nothing to the bike except wash it.... I think I changed the spark plug once... I've had the bike since brand new(2001) and it starts every time...
