I have a 97 Ranger 4x4, 4.0, 5sp. Why does the owners manual state NOT to put a plow on this truck? Is this something to do with the airbag system? Is there something inherently weak in the drivetrain that the factory suggests this? I didn't realise I bought a glorified yuppie rig instead of a 'Built Ford Tough' 4x4!

Nothing to do with air bags, they just got tired of warrenting these trucks with all the damage a plow does. I plow commercially with mine, you just void the warrentee. A few upgrades you need are front air bags a must, a tranny cooler is nice to have and a 4.0l engine.
Remember these are yuppie trucks! The suspension, frame and 4x4 components are designed for a smoothe ride and comfort, not brute force. NOTE: Even a F-150 is not a good plow truck with out upgrades. The best plow truck is a F-250/350 short bed truck. Just be gentle and do a lot of maintenance and you will get by with the Ranger.
Actually, it doesn't void the warranty. BUT... any damage the plow creates isn't covered under the warranty. Any other warranty work, not caused by the plow, is covered.
