fuel pump problems

fuel pump problems
my 87 ranger 2.3 has been giving me some fits lately. once in a while it runs, once in a while it doesn't. before it runs, you can hear the fuel pump. before it doesn't run, you can't here the fuel pump. but when i took the pump off it worked just fine. any ideas as to what could be in between that could give me fits?
