thermastat

86 f150.302 FI, I'm changing the thermastat and i'm wondering what degree should i think about and do i have to drain the entire rad to do this?

You don't have to drain the radiator at all. Start with a cold engine. Remove the hose from the thermostat housing and catch any antifreeze the is in the hose. Bend the hose back or out of the way. as long as the open end is up. Remove the thermostat housing. Remove the old thermostat. Clean the mating surfaces of old gasket material. Place new thermostat in the correct way (it will tell you on it which side faces the engine). Place gasket, put housing on and torque down the bolts. As for what temperature thermostat, I believe yours is a 190 or 195 degree thermostat. I run a 180 in mine to ensure that it does not overheat.

mako is correct, 195 is your stock thermostat temp. you may however wish to run a 180 in arizona.

When I used to run 180's in my F-150, I discovered that the computer would list codes indicating that the engine was not heating up properly. Stick in a 195, and all is well.
