i have to admit though; i have more fun on CB.
I tried to go from Novice to Extra in one shot. I was a novice for about 5 years. Decided I wanted to get into the 2 meter activity in Indy (back when the "Mighty 525" was still on the air) - I took the 20 WPM code test - failed. I wanted to take the 13 WPM code which I knew I would pass. I was told I couldn't because "all they did was take the same tape and slow it down" .. this was DeVry VEC and of all people Peggy Coulter (now the Indiana ARRL SM) running this show. So I left there with a Tech and General written credit. I went 3 weeks later to the red cross. Took Extra written, missed by 1 question. Took advanced and passed. Took 13 WPM code and passed with flying colors.
Now that the FCC has revised the licensing, I can just take one written exam and get Extra. I'm off air at the moment but I'll be soon at least putting a 2 meter/440 rig in my truck, and maybe something for the apt.
I like those Kenwoods with the blue screens - V7A I think is the model.

Was this the Greenfield Hamfest? They used to hold theirs in December right before the holidays.
And no I've never been to Dayton. I might go next year.

Got my ticket in 1988. Upgraded to Extra in 1989. I was 14 when I started out, it's a fun hobby. I'm not on as much as I used to be, but I still get active in a few CW contests and Field Day. I enjoy collecting old "boatanchors" and building. My building has ranged from making breadboard tube QRP rigs to an Elecraft K2. The nice thing about the hobby is that it has so many facets that you can get into. There's a group of guys in our club that do nothing but satellites.. another handful of people do alot of digital work. Me? I collect and restore older stuff, build things and operate now and then. Right now we're in an apartment so the HF antenna and space is kinda limited (my collection is at the parents house... it's just me, a vhf rig and the K2). 73's,
Not me, but my Scoutmaster from my scout troop has been for years. He was a radio operator in the merchant marines since WW II. He retired and set up his own ship to shore radio station for ships coming in and out of the port of Tampa, finally sold that and retired. He even served in the Persian Gulf war on a hospital ship, the USS Comfort, i think.
