Was this the Greenfield Hamfest? They used to hold theirs in December right before the holidays.
And no I've never been to Dayton. I might go next year.

1970f2504x4, man you said it! i enjoy tinkering with the things almost more than talking on them. just picked up a Knight Safari 1 23 ch. tube type cb. should be fun to restore. anyone remember knightkit?
i swear, sometimes this hobby is like Legos; as soon as you finish building it, you want to take it all apart again and build something else.
I have two real old Globe, five channel, tube type, base mobile CB's that still used vibrators instead of a rectifiers for ac-dc conversion. Back in the early 70's I put one at my girlfriends house and one at mine and reversed the Tx and Rx crystals which put us on some unknown frequency so we could have private conversations.

Is there a "college students with absolutely no money but really really wish they could be hams" club?
Actually most large college campuses have amateur radio clubs. IU and Purdue have them. I'd check into your student activites group. Most of the time there's a basic station that's setup for licensed students to use.
hey ubermich, we'll find you the instructions on how to convert the microwave oven in your dorm into a transceiver. then we'll hook it to the radiator that is inevitably in there for an antenna, then we'll patch that into your cell phone. just push the talk button and make sure you are standing BEHIND the microwave! after we put out the ensuing fire; we'll use the cell phone to call your parents so they can wire you the money to repair the dorm room. then we'll spend that money on a ham radio for you. See, all you have to do is be a creative thinker!
KE6YCO Here...tech "no-code" since 95 (due for renewal soon). Stationed in Norfolk, Va. Have a Yaesu FT-2500M 2M mobile in my bronco tied to a really beat up old hustler mag mount (for now) and have a Radio Shack HTX-200 2-M ht that I carry occasionally.
KB8UPA since Aug 1994, was a Tech Plus but just got renewed as a Tech. Need to get off my butt and take the General test before I lose the CSCE for my 5wpm code credit.
