It seems the '92 E150 I sold to my brother is having some issues. It shifts fine when taking off normal, but if you stand on it (he's a volunteer fireman) it wont' engage second. It sounds to me like a band adjustment, but I don't know if they can be adjusted in this trans.
There is no external band adjustment. There is a servo under the valve body inside the transmission. My guess is the band is burned up and slips at WOT.
What happens when it tries to shift? Does it neutral, just stays in first? Do you have to let off to get it to shift? Then does it go to third?
He (little bro) said that it goes into second when he lets off. I haven't driven it yet so I'm not sure if it's hittin second or third. He hasn't said it drops rpm drastically so I am goin to assume it is indeed hittin second. When at WOT it "freewheels" as he puts it, when it trys to shift.
When I changed it, it read full cold with 4 quarts, but slipped a little so I added more and it didn't seem to move on the stick. I am wondering if he's overfilled it. Could that cause a similar problem?
He's working third shift so gettin to talk to him has been kind of a pain... I'll see if I can get ahold of him tomorrow and quiz him some more, to see what's really goin on.
Okay, I got to talk to him today, he said it's going into second when he is driving it normally, but when he stands on it it neutrals after first, then slams into third when he backs off.
hello, good luck. when i changed fluids last time i think more than 4 came out. i needed a full 5. my stick has hash marks and reads"do not fill when in these marks". mine slipped until i had the hash mark topped off. as you know, it's hard to read the stick let alone get at it. u need a funnel to fill, then can't read it until the fluid settles. there is chance it might be alittle low. my 87 is a pain to get to, i hope the 92 fixed that. i'd tell him to get a good reading after going through the gears warmed up. one time i couldn't get a reading only to find out there was none on the stick to read.
also, there is a post at the very bottom of the "tech articles" page. it shows how to get all 18 quarts out of these tranny's. i'm gonna try it next time. i wanted to flush out the old and this shows a neat trick.
if he runs it cold. you might want to think about oil weight. remind him to secure stuff inside. when you drive fast u stop fast, sometimes. if i were running mine hard i would also flush the coolant more often. check hoses and vacuum lines and such. flooring a cold engine then slamming on the brakes can really shock a system. i've blown hoses, cores and slipped a timing chain to name a few things. good oil and filter is a must if you dont want that ticking sound. the fords in the fleet that the kids drove got the tick and it's hard to get rid of. but my old 351w was tough as nails. should be great for a fireman.
It's hot 172k miles on it. The engine is fine, the trans is a rebuilt unit that has ~140k on it. It's not surprising to me that it's going out as I was hard on it, and so it he. We used it more than once in situations where a one ton was needed. I ran the snot out of it, raced it, burnt off the new tires that were on it when I bought it in a month. So it's been abused. It also towed almost 10k out of penn through the mountians of maryland and west virgina. So it's got a right to be acting up.
