I need some guidance. My truck was leaking exhaust from the back of the engine and generally running awful. (rough idle, 5mpg, black smoke) my mechanic had me replace the EGR Tubes off the back of the engine, he replace the O2 sensor, tuned it up and it ran great for about 1500 miles. (smooth idel, 10-12 mgg, lots of power, no smoke and no smell of exhaust) I had taken it to a muffler shop after we did the work and they assured me the original exhaust was intact and they welded one small leak, all else was good.
now after about 1500 miles the symptons of exhaust smell, bad idle and awful gas milege (90 miles for about 20 gallons)
Now my mecanic tells me that this year modle has computer issues and that most likely the comp. is telling the truck to run like crud. He suggested either replacing the computer than retuning, or putting a piggy back computer on the old computer to straigten out the codes then retunning.
Has anyone heard of this, dose it sound reasonable and are there any suggested courses of action I might take to help do the correct thing?
are you referring to the "fuel pressure regulator" that is incorporated in with the fuel charging manifold that supplies pressurized fuel directly to the fuel injectors?
it says this regulator uses the engine manifold vacuum to sense engine demand. Is this what we are talking about?
Start with lowest code first by testing the part and wiring. Look at a Haynes for voltage numbers. Let us know which parts you tested. Just don't replace the O2 sensor, could be running lean because of something else.
KOEO (not running)
111 no memory trouble codes
KOER (running)
18 Check base timing & advance function - Timing Tests SPOUT circuit open or spark angle word failure
172 Oxygen sensor not switching - system is or was lean - Single, Right or Rear HO2S - Fuel control HEGO sensor circuit indicates system lean (right side)
332 EGR did not open/respond during test - EVR or PFE EGR valve opening not detected.
Check your fuel pressure with a guage. I had this same problem with a f150 I had. I replaced every sensor on the truck before I thought of this. And yes the regulator is on the fuel rail. There is a schrader valve also on the fuel rail to check FP. A guage sells for $35 at the parts store.
When I checked My FP it was 95 psi!! Put and adjustable FP regulator on (3 bolts) and never had the problem again.
Post what you come up with.
Maybe somebody can post what the FP is on a stock 460?
It seems my 95 is having the same problems. I've only replaced the o2 sensor so far. Keep us posted on what happens with yours. I will post as well, if my problem is solved.
Couldn't break free from work in time to post results. I only mention this because it is my first time in a forum like this. I have received such great help and responses I don't want any of you out there with all this wonderful info to dissapear on me. I should have some results by this weekend.
Thanks again, I will contribute to keep this going.
Cleaned throttle regulator with carb fulid, dusted and checked conections on map, including vacum line and O2. should have a chance to check pressure, though I do have vacum, on the fuel pressure regulator this weekend. Will Report. I have gotten better milege this week and haven't noticed the shimmy in the idle as much, but that is probably the carborator fluid in my brain. The power stearing appears to be whining a bit, but its always something. Thanks again for help, hopefully there' more when I get some answeres.
The power steering pump whining noise is fairly normal I think. When I had the motor done last year I replaced the pump thinking it was on it's way out. It still makes the same noise, but never binds or causes any steering issues.
Hey fella's.. I beefed up a 300 I-6 in a 150 a few years back. One of the things I installed was a variable fp regulator. I bought it from Jeggs. It was very handy. I could turn it up for HP or down for MPG. It was an easy install. It was a 30 second task to change the pressure. and an instant result. ~D~
I have checked the Map sensor. Correct voltage and good circuit. Same with the EGR Sensor and same with the TPS. I have not done the same check on the O2 sensor, but again, the Check Engine Light is not on. I did remove the TPSensor Housing, and cleaned it with carboratour fluid. Other than that I have done nothing and the truck now seems to, miraculously, be getting better mileage and the shimmy durring idle is appearantly gone. for now. I am perplexed. I am going to check the O2 sensor and I various vacuum lines. other than that I am not sure what else I could find. I will report back in the next few days. I should be switching back to the rear tank, and this could all be caused by the tank regulator? I am no mechanic.
Thanks again.
