Fuel Delivery problems? 302 Ranger

I picked up an 83 Ranger someone put a 302 in.As long as I keep it about 1/2 throttle it runs great. As soon as the rpm's are lowered it loads up and stalls.I put the carb off my 302 Bronco on with the same results,it works fine on the Bronco.Am I having a problem elsewhere?Points are set and brand new, distributer looks good. After I run it at about 2000 rpms for a couple minutes trying to find the problem,it stalls and won't start for awhile, seems flooded.Any advise is appreciated. Thanks Rick

P.S. I'm told the motor is from a 69 Mustang

manimal. is the float set too high, or are you getting too much fuel pressure to the carb. you didn't say if it was a mechanical or electric fuel pump. ron46

Is it putting out black smoke from the tailpipe? I'm thinking stuck or malfunctioning float valve/seat.

Check your ignition timing. If the timing is advanced or retarded too far it wil have those results.

Thanks to alll for the input. The timing is good and I questioned the float adjustment,I'll have to figure out how to do it.It's a holley 2bbl carb. The fuel pump is electric but I havent looked to see where it is.Is the pressure maybe too high because this was a fuel injected truck to begin with. Also, did the old motor have a return line for the fuel? There isnt one for this this old 302 in it now.You guys are great advisors and I would have gotten rid of my old 82 Bronco long ago had I not found this place. Thanks again! Rick

Sorry, two more questions...Is it a big deal to change the distributer over from this point distributer to an electronic one,and this points distributer has two vacuum lines from the advance...where do they need to hook in?

Lightbulb fuel delivery probs.:

if it is an electric fuel pump, you'll have to put a pressure regulator on it. the carbs only need about 2 to 4 lbs. pressure,as some of the fuel injection uses 20 to 40 lbs. go to the auto parts store and ask for a fuel pressure reg. with gauge. you can adjust the pressure before the carb.as for the dist., the one vacuum line can be blocked off. some cars had a vacuum gauge to let you know how your fuel economy was by how much vacuum was being drawn through it, and the rate of advance on the timing. if i were you, i would leave the points in it. i just put a 302 in my 92 ranger, and i pulled all of the electronic garbage out of it. i'm running a lincoln 302 with a roller cam. i would rather know what my motor is doing, rather than some damn artificial intelligence telling me. it's just a matter of a little point adjustment when they wear a bit. that's easier than trying to figure what a computer is doing. that's just my opinion. some others will probably disagree, but i'm too old to change, i like the old simple stuff. ron46

302 ranger

Just curious, do these rangers turn into little rockets wit ha 302 in them? I always had an interest in doing it, does it kick some serious but when racing?

Well,Thanks for all the advise.I have it running good now because the problem turned out to be loose manifold bolts(what a dope I am sometimes )Anyways,to answer the speed question...truly unbelievable how fast this thing is with the 302 but LOTS of fun. Thanks for everyones advise. Now I'm having a charging problem because I don't know how the alternator should be hooked up.It has a wire to the selenoid and a wire grounded to the battery.I have a question posted in the electrical section and hoping someone will help me out. Thanks again-Rick

Mods for your ranger

I own an 83 Ranger with a 302, too. Mine is out of a 69 mustang also but is a 302HO. It is equipped with a Crane Fireball 2 cam, shorty headers, Edelbrock Performer Rpm intake, Holley 750cfm double pumper, and is backed up by a top loader 4 speed. The swap from points to electronic is fairly simple. Give Summit Racing or Jegs a call for upgrades and they should be able point you in the right direction. just leave me a message if you have anymore questions.
hope i was able to help
