When the check gages light comes on because you are low on fuel, how many gallons are still in the tank? I have heard a few numbers but all contradictory.
nothing personal, but you should never allow the fuel level to fall that low! fill it up when it hits quarter tank or else you run the risk of all the debris and crap that sits in your gas tank getting sent into the system and blocking filters or worse
Well between you, me and the fence post. It sounds as though you need this answer so I'll help you get your "EXACT ANSWER". Put all the rumors aside. Find the answer for yourself. Put five gallons of gas in a five gallon can (you can get more than five gallons in the five gallon can so be precise and watch the gallons at the pump not the dollars) and securely afix it in the bed of your truck so it won't slide or fall over or leak. When the check gauges light comes on, reset your odometer trip and drive as you normally would not going too far from home. When you run out of gas you will need to add the five gallons of fuel to the tank until the light goes out. Have someone watch the light if you can't see it yourself (be sure the key is on).Stop putting fuel in and record the miles on the trip odometer then drive back to your house. When you get home measure the gas left in the five gallon can. Subtract the what you have measured at the house from the full five gallons and you'll have the answer to your question. You'll also know in the future about how far you can drive when the light comes on. Hope this helped!!
C-YA on the road.
Each gas tank and sending unit is a little different. So there really is not correct answer. Also according to my 2000 ranger manual if you run your tank dry you may never be able to fill it to the advertised rating again. Mine holds 19.5 gallons.
If your fuel pump is in the gas tank it is never a good idea to run your tank too low. Your fuel pump uses gas as a coolant. If you run your tank dry to many times this will cause your fuel pump to overheat and shorten its life. Fuel pumps are very expensive to replace on the rangers if they are mounted in the gas tank
I have a 2001 XLT 4x4. When my light comes on I have 5 gallons left! LOL! Ford says they are aware of the problem but their not sure how to fix it. Thats nice!
Its also a 4 door Extra Cab. The Air leaks are pretty bad. If your going to buy one Test drive it at 65!
do not run your tank dry!!! too many risks. if your that curious, drive your truck until the light comes on, drop the tank and measure. my best guesstimate would be 2 gallons.
Contrary, Motorcraft does not recommend the fuel filter be changed on the Ford Ranger, unless the filter is severely clogged. This goes for the entire life of the vehicle. There should be no need to replace the filter, and, as it is high pressure, is not recommended.
The Ford design spec says the light should come on when there is approximately 50 miles of driving left. "Should" is the key word here. It leaves a lot of leeway because of the varity of powertrain combinations available in Rangers, tire sizes, driving styles, axle ratios, terrain, weather, vehicle loading etc.
Consult the owners manual for your vehicle to determine if fuel filter changes are needed. Some years, Ford did not require filter changes, but Ford went back to every 30k changes a few years ago.
What bunch of complicated answers rather than a simple one.
Look in your manual. If you don't have one, find someone with a 95 Ranger that does and look in it.
For your truck (regular bed, extended, etc) find the capacity of your gas tank.
Drive your truck until the 'low fuel' light comes on.
Fill it up. Subtract the number of gallons of gas you put in it from the capacity. That's how many gallons was left in your tank when the 'low fuel' light came on.
When your light comes on you have approx. 3 gallons left in the tank and fuel lines combined. I work with about 40 mechanics and they all say the same thing.

Just a quick question - Fuel tanks get dirty - fuel filters remove the contaminants! - Eventually, the fuel filter will get clogged if you do not change it! I'm sorry, but just where did you see that motorcraft does not recommend a filter change? And yes, the fuel system is a high-pressure system, and that is why there are depressurization techniques! You go ahead and run your ranger with a clogged filter! I’ll wave to you when I pass your broken down truck on the side of the highway!
There is a TSB out on this issue, a replacement fuel pump assembly and sending unit is the apparent fix. Lord knows I'd love to have *some* idea how much gas I really have, my gauge has been off by 5 gallons for a year.
