I've seen discussions about how the new plug recommended by Ford,
the Motorcraft AGSF22WM has a fully threaded style versus the original
plug callout of the AWSF22E.
Has anybody installed the fully threaded style or is the consensus
to stay with the AWSF22E to avoid carbon buildup on the longer, exposed
threads of the AGSF?
98, F250LD, 93K miles and getting ready for a plug changeout...
While the new plugs might have more threads, they don't extend any further into the combustion chamber. Since the additional threads are above the head, they serve no useful function; nor would carbon be a problem.
You probably can't get the old style plugs now, in any event.
When I ordered my oem plugs early this year they came in model AGSF22WM. They do have the full threads, but like Stan said, they go into the head the same distance as the old style.
I haven't had any problems with these plugs except the installation!!
But I'm sure you read about that process!
Why don't they go into the heads any farther if they have more threads? They must have a thicker gasket to stop them from extending any farther into the head and then what was the point of more threads. Confused!
For future reference, Autozone carries both the AGSF22WM and the
earlier AWSF22E, and at a cost of $2.49. BIG savings over the local
dealer who wants $7.70 /plug.
I have both samples on my desk and now understand the difference.
hey guys i just bought a 99 f-150 with the 4.6. I heard about the plugs "flying out" of the heads. Out of curiousity how much does the "average " shop charge to change them out? BTW i only have 35k on the truck so it will be a while before the changeout.
On the 4.6 I think it's fairly straight forward....so it shouldn't be very much. The 4.6's are not as prone but you still need to check them every so often. I check mine at every other oil change and re-torque each one to spec.

Also keep in mind Ed The Parts Guy who lists here would also have these direct from Ford for a substantial discount over most local dealers.

If you're even halfway mechanically inclined I'd read up on the best practice for doing this yourself. Too many horror stories of both independent and dealership shops not doing this correctly then not accepting responsibility when a plug does get spit out. I attempted to order Ford's recommended anti-seize (nickel based) but was told by the parts counter guy none of the tech's in their shop use anything on the plug threads. This was troubling and only fortified my thoughts I'd tackle the project myself regardless how difficult it is in my E van or what special tools needed.
I'd not recommend going over 50-60K miles on the plugs--lots of stories about major difficult removal after they've gone the suggested (??) 100K mile interval. There should be more than enough real person descriptions of how best to do this-----after the first time its not quite so daunting. Just be glad you don't own an E van----seat removal is just one part of those beasts!
Also of note is the Motorcraft plugs threads are cut somewhat differently from other brands, which might contribute to a few problems.
I've heard changing plugs in the F series would run approx $250, much more by the time they discover a whole other list of things needed fixed not warranty coverd.
