i can't get my 428 to start it was working fine a few days ago it cranks has a orange spark? and it made a giant boom sound out the exhaust which scared the crap outta me. what could be wrong the points are new the wires are new the coil is new the condensor is new the plugs are new i am getting 5.68 volts at the coil could it be the coil
Although 6 volts sounds low at the coil, things did go boom. I belive the stock style coils are supposed to get about 9v input. I'd be looking at timing or possibly you slipped a tooth on the timing gear/chain.
But, try another coil before you tear the timing cover off.
Sounds like you got some extra fuel that filled the exhaust and then lit off by chance. Usually will balloon a muffler....or make it fall apart depending on the condition.
Anyway, I would work on the spark. Re-check the dwell.
How many miles on motor?? 110K, or is it fresh?? Could be the timing chain finally jump, if it's original nylon one.
I would be willing to bet one of two things either you flooded the moter or a simple, stupid wire came loose between the coil and the distributer. Unless you have some mean buddys that stole your rotor, cause unless you have changed somthing in those few days there shouldnt be a problem.
Electronic ignition or point(or mechanical?) ignition?
if you have near 5 Volt the problem is not the coil...
-check your battery(you voltimeter must shown near 12 v... if it show near 5 volt, here is the problem.)
-disconect the coil an take a look at the voltimeter, check between the (+) wire(the wire that feed the coil) and ground("- pole" in any part of the body) if you have 12 volts, well... the coil have a problem. if you have another coil, replace it an try to star the engine.
if both of the "tips" you have checked and work well, you must to see trhe distributor position, but if you dont touch it, no one problem must be in the distributor.
sorry about my bad english & I hope you can start the engine.
regards,
Mariano
The Big Boom thing makes me think he's getting fuel :-)
i installed a see thru fuel filter it has pressure the spark plugs smell like gas i junked the spark plug wires so i will have to get more i tested them with a ohm meter and they were all bad most were about 16,000 ohms when the book said they should be 8,000 and the cap is fine all the terminals tested 0 ohms
I was thinking that carb was full of fuel initially...then after he pumped it out..no more fuel. Basically went from flooded to no fuel at all.
As a quick test..>I would disconnect the condensor and try to start. I have seen more than ONE of those little buzzards short out and basically leave you stranded. It's worth a shot.
