MY 2001 EDGE 4.0 5 SPEED AUTO HAS A NOISE WHILE ACCELERATING. IT HAPPENS ONLY WHEN TRUCK IS FIRST RUN AND DISSAPPEARS AFTER WARMING UP AFTER A FEW MILES. IT JUST TURNED 1500 MILES. CAN'T FIGURE OUT IF IT IS FROM TRANS OR POSSIBLY A SPEEDO CABLE. IT GOES TO THE DEALER NEXT WEEK. HAS ANYONE HAD THIS PROBLEM? THANKS.
My 2001 XLT Off-Road with the 4.0L/5sp auto made a noise that I could only describe as a rattle sounding like someone saying 'shhhhhhh' pretty loud. It'd only do it noticeably when cold, and only under moderate acceleration, ie., when it got over about 2750rpm. It'd go away as soon as the rpms would drop below that point, come back again in the next gear, etc. I finally got the shop foreman at the dealership to drive it when cold, and he has diagnosed it as a spark knock, which can damage the engine if left untreated.
Today is day 28 in the shop for my Ranger, so lemon law proceedings will be starting tomorrow.
AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ON LINE, THE NOISE IS ACTUALLY A TIMING CHAIN RATTLE. THERE ARE A COUPLE OF TECH SERVICE BULLITINS REGARDING THIS PROBLEM. MY TRUCK WAS AT THE DEALER ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO. I PRINTED THE TSB AND SHOWED THE DEALER. FOR GAVE ME A COPY OF THEIR TSB, WHICH STATES THAT THE NOISE WILL NOT HAVE ANY AFFECT ON THE DURABILITY OF THE ENGINE. FORD ENGINEERING IS INVESTIGATING THE PROBLEM, BUT THERE IS NOT A RECOMMENDED FIX AT THIS TIME. THE SERVICE MGR. SAID THERE MAY BE A RECALL AT SOME POINT ON THE SPRING TENSIONER. I SUGGEST YOU PASS THIS INFO ONTO YOUR DEALER SINCE IT SEEMS THEY HAVE MISDIASNOSED YOUR PROBLEM. LET ME KNOW IF YOU NEED A COPY OF THE TSB. GOOD LUCK.
If you could post the TSB number I'd sure appreciate it.
Btw, ALL CAPS MEANS YOU'RE YELLING
Then again, if you'd bought my Ranger, you would be yelling.
Sorry for the caps. I have always found it easier to type that way since i am a lousy typist. What Ford gave me a copy of was their "Special Service Message #14868". Have your dealer check this for you.
My 2001 4.0 Ranger also sound like it has a spark, or valve rattle when I push on the gas a little hard. I've tried different gas, higher octane, and the same thing. It sounds out of time. Does the EGR sensor have anything to do with it. It is the only sensor that I have not changed out of ALL of them. I have new plugs and a new coil. Thank's
