the coolest tunnel i've been in was out in CO my dad loves trains so we would get up into the mountin passes and follow the Denver and Rio Grande. one tunnel was only one lane wide and only wide enough for the motor home. it was a curved roof tunnel so me and my sister were in the top of the motorhome checking the 2 in clearance that my dad had on either side. that was fun, then we heard in the news it collapsed like 2 weeks after we were there.
oh man i hate when people slow down in the tunnels, that happens to me at the lincon and holland tunnels goin to NYC sometimes... no wonder why it takes 45 minutes in rush hour... i guess i've been through a lot of tunnels, in addition to those two, there the battery to brooklyn, queens-midtown... that one down in virginia, eisenhower on I-70 in colorado(isn't that where the continental divide is?) and theres a bunch of them all around PA.
My motorcycle broke down on me once while I was in the MIDDLE of the Fort Pitt tunnel in Roethlishburg PA (Pittsburgh)!!
This just happened to happen on a Friday afternoon right before rush hour traffic! Those of you familiar with Pittsburgh will know that the at the end of the mile long tunnel is a 3/4mile BRIDGE!
I ended up PUSHING my motorcycle about 1.5 miles and caused a MASSIVE traffic tie up! It was pretty embarrassing as I exited the tunnel and then on to the bridge... I look up and see the WTUE traffic HELICOPTER hovering just over the bridge!
What a day that was!
How big a bike? I can't believe nobody stopped to help at all at least.
I was just on the interstate a few minutes ago and went through the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel. It's a bridge/tunnel system that connects the South Side of Hampton Roads to the Penninsula, specifically Norfolk to Hampton. The tunnel itself is a mile long, measured it with my odometer just to be sure.
Well I got into the tunnel and was doing 55, just going right along which is very unusual for this tunnel it's usually bumper to bumper for miles. Then I look in my rear view mirrior and notice the guy behind me has traffic backed up about 1/4 - 1/2 mile behind me. Maybe it's because I'm young and have driven through tunnels all my life but I don't get why people slow down to 35 - 40mph when they are in a nice wide tunnel. I could see if it was really narrow or something but come on, it's no different then staying in your own lane on the interstate.

Now in Texas but grew up in Newport News and commuted to Old Dominion University and Worked quite a bit on the Southside. My commuting buddy used to refer to "the dreaded tunnel monster" as the reason folsk slowed down going into it. I seem to remeber that the road actually takes a bit of a turn right before going into the water (tunnel). Some folks not from there get a little freaked out about going under water. I thought it odd the first time I heard that from one of these folks because I just neve thought about it. It is a cool set of tunnels. Much better now than years back when there was only the single tube and a toll. I hear there is a new tunnel from downtown NN to the South side. Hope it doesn't back up like the HRBT.

There SERIOUSLY is a burough of Pittsburgh named Roethlishburg?? Quite close spelling to (Ben) Roethlisberger :P
But more seriously, I love tunnels I was through that one in WV/VA (can't remember which state it was in, probably WV) on I77 on the way to Charlotte for the Coca Cola 600, and have been through the tunnel in Lehigh Valley, PA many times (family in Philly).

You want fun? Come to Boston and drive through a brand new, 2 mile long, $15 billion tunnel that is leaking like a sieve and, by the way, you are in bumper to bumper traffic most of the day. On a cold day all the leaking water freezes and makes the traffic report real interesting.....
And so far it is only 10 years late and $10 Billion over budget.....
