fred has a problem

New York emission standard change.

my brother was told bye pep boys that his OBD II communication failure. connectors are OKAY, but still unable to communicate. the NYVIP unit must communicate with your vehicle to test its OBD for NY state inspection. We reccomend you contact a qualified tech for assistance. and have the vehicle repaired to manufacturer specs
They took inspection sticker and would not up date.

Anyone got any answers

Eric

Hi I am Fred, you know the one with the problem

Posters: I had my 2000 Ford Explorer XLT, inspected in New York (land of the over taxed). It seems my state has established new regulations. The boys at local Pep Boys hooked up my OBDII and got the message seen posted by Cliffordred below. The question is can I go back and have them do something about this without having to pay another garage to go throught the process.

Thanks for the info. Would the OBDII allow the unit to see a connection but not communicate? Do you have any details on this fuse?
Thanks again

Yeah, i saw that post also, but cant find it at the moment. Eric is your cigarette lighter working? If it isnt, look at the fuse page in your owners manual & check the fuse.

Now that you mention it my cigarette lighter is not working. I will try that and see if that will do it.
Thanks very much.

If you're lucky a new fuse will fix the lighter & the OBD. Keep us posted.

OBD II and the fuse

I pulled the fuse today and the wire element looked fine. I am thnk ing about going tomorrow and buying a couple of the fuses just trying them. The issue was not a result of the fuse so far.

I will post the fix when I find it out tomorrow. I have alreadt resigned myself to writing a check, $500.00 just like every other time I have taken this vehicle to them.

Thanks again for your help.

I dont have a wiring diagram for an 00, so i have no idea how it's wired or if the cig lighter is on the same fuse as the data link connector. But the wiring diagram for a 97 Ex shows a seperate fuse that powers only the data link.
Yours "might" be the same.
On the 97 it's interior fuse panel fuse 5. Might want to take a look at that & take a look at the fuse page in your owners manual for "data link connector." Good luck with it, hopefully this wont be another 500 buck fix.

Problem Solved

Thanks again for the help. I took the truck in and they found a missing fuse. They issued the inspection and called me up, good to go.

Me too. The cigarette lighter even works now, imagine that. One note for anyone who cares, beware of thrid party cell phone chargers for your vehicles. The off market ones may be a tight fit and may short the wiring in the lighter outlet by pulling it.

Thanks again all.
