Question Need advice

It's now time to buy a new truck. Well new to me anyway. I need to know the pro and cons of each on of these. Looking for best value, longivity and gas mileage. What I am looking at it 2000-2001 f-150. With a 4.2L or 4.6L. With AutoTran. I don't do alot of hauling but some. What kind of service can I expect for either one of these? I've a good luck with my Ranger with 195,000miles But it's time to move up.

Suggestion

My 1998 F 150 4.6L runs as good now as it did when new. 138,000 miles ago.
I have pulled some but nothing to heavy and it did just fine. I like the 4.6L better than the other motors. It does what I need it to do without complaining.

If you don't do any heavy towing, the 4.2 is a great motor. I've heard many accounts of these engines going 150,000+ miles and still running great. You'd also save a lot of money over a comparable truck with the V8.

I would absolutely select the 4.6 over the 4.2. Great motor, refined through many years of fleet use in Ford Crown Victoria taxicabs and police cars.

Here's the deal. Get the 4.6 if you can. If you are wanting auto, then get the 4.6. The 4.2 can pull anything you can fit in the bed, but towing is another story. The 4.6 is only a 500 dollar option, the auto is what is expensive, at about 1100. And the resale value, if you ever plan on getting rid of the truck, sucks with the V-6. Just an honest response. I think you would be disapointed with the preformance of the 6 cyl. I thought the 4.6 was a little wimpy, so I stuck to the 5.4 which I love. I need it for towing... but I think you would be happier with the power of the V8, unless you don't intend to do much hauling of anything and value the milage more, in which case the 4.2 might be your thing.

I'd go with the 8, the 6's gas milage isn't that much better and you get the torque with the 8. My 4.6 runs great at 99000 miles. fires right up, even when it's zero degrees. I've got the 3.55 rear non-posi...def get the posi!!
