Is it save to run the motor with open heads, no manifolds or anything? (aside from catching the engine compartement on fire?) Anyone tried this before?
I've heard that cold air pulses will get back up the exhaust port and warp the exhaust valves. Not a good thing. Besides, you'll have fire shooting out a couple feet. Very dangerous. I wouldn't even consider it.
You actually want some piping after the exhaust port, as it will resonate and the pressure waves will actually draw the exhaust out of the cylinder, to a point.
Ever see a dragster with eight individual pipes coming off the engine? That's the ideal setup for power. If they could get more power running open heads they would. Of course, there may be some rules limiting this, for safety issues.
