I've swapped out my 351M, and dropped a 390 in it's place. The oil filter on the 390 points out the side, whereas the 351 goes down. The new way the oil filter is, it is soo close to the steering box that I can't get the lines on it. I bought an oil filter re-location kit, and put it on, then hooked up the power steering, after making a bracket to mount the pump to my new motor. When I started it up, I hardly had any oil pressure. The gauge only lifted up until it got the the "L". Then the lifter startewd ticking like hell, so I shut it off, and haven't started it yet. If I buy a new high volume pump will that fix my problem?
BTW, the oil pump in it now is stock, and before the re-location kit, I had pressure....not much, but at least I had enough
I've got your solution. Well, actually DSC Motorsports has it. You need the oil filter adapter that turns the filter down. It's listed as the "Ford C8AE CJ Filter Adapters- Used" and its a little over halfway down. For $30, you cant go wrong!
Edit: A high volume pump is a good idea.

Kurt, what about his low oil pressure though? If that is a new cam and engine that isn't a good thing. Did you put the gasket between the pump and block, gasket between the pickup and pump? I am not doubting you but those will cause your oil pressure to fluctuate. Another check is to make sure you got all of the oil gallery plugs in and that they sealed... A hi-volume pump is a good idea in an FE but it will not fix your problem, it would maybe help mask it but...
Also, if you end up using the car/ 4x4 pickup/ heavy duty truck style oil filter adapter, make sure to get the big entry one and not the small entry one. This is one of the oil system mods described in the Ford Performance book but then again if you didn't drill out the passage from the oil pump to oil filter adapter (chamfer the ends with a die grinder) it probably wouldn't do you any good so that is something to think about.
well the motor isn't completely rebuilt. all I did was clean up the block, hone it out, new rod and main bearings, new cam, lifters, valve springs....valve seats weren't too bad, but I think that after running unleaded thru them they'll need a fixin'!....and of course all new gaskets.....the oil galleries Rn't clean....they are a littler more than before, but I jsut didn't have the money to spare, or the tools to fix that myself.......
My oil pressure was ALWAYS steady in the lower end of the "Normal" section on the gauge.....it would run high when it was cold, and run lower if I let it idle for a bit.....but pretty normal.......when I put the oil filter reloaction in it, I lost LOTS of pressure.....so I'm guessing my pump was having trouble pushing oil thru the whole re-loaction setup

Since he said the oil pressure was fine before the oil filter relocation kit, I'm guessing that caused the low oil pressure. He probably didn't let it run long enough to get all the air out of the lines and the pressure never had a chance to build.
Is this a newly rebuilt 390, or was it a used one dropped in?
Either way, I think a real oil pressure gauge that reads PSI would be a VERY good investment. Avoid the Napa plastic line ones though, I had the line crimp itself during cam break in on my new 390. Read the initial 75psi the whole time. After I got done with cam break in and shut it off, it still read 75psi. No harm done though, fortunately it has plenty of oil pressure. That was when I found the bent / crimped plastic line. Dont cheap out like I did, get the copper line.
Edit: We posted at the same time! Never mind the question about new or rebuilt.
I think it should've had the time to pump the air out...I let it run for a good charge of time......for that exact reason.....but after a while of hearing the noise of those lifters, I figured it was time to call it a nite,....but if I put the new Hi volume pump, will it give me pressure, and a safe amount so I don't hurt the motor?
Maybe, maybe not. I cant tell you. However, one thing does concern me. You said the lifter galleries were clean. How did you determine this? You did put new plugs in the end of 'em, didn't you? Otherwise, all the oil gets squirted out back into the timing cover and back into the pan, starving the motor. That would definately cause low oil pressure!
If thats not it, a high volume oil pump will help a little. They say 25% more flow than a stock pump, which really isn't that much more. You could probably get more pressure by going to a thicker oil, like 15w40.
well I didn't say they were CLEAN, but cleaner...lol....they are nething BUT like new.....and I never took any of those plugs out....I'm not really too concerned on whether or not this motor last over 2 or 3 years......so I figured that if I was only planning on putting like another 30K on it, it REALLY wouldn't need a rebuild, I just wanted to make a little more HP than stock.....it's a daily driver, and I'm jsut a kid, so it's not TOO important
