does this sound right?

I'm still new to diesels but am quickly falling in love!! I have the 7.3 in our company van (96) and borrowed it lastnight. Had some problems with its running but will try to get it in soon. My question though is this.........how many miles to the gallon should I be getting?? I'm afraid to tell what I'm getting before I know what is normal. Normal meaning with very little load and a little bit of highway driving (65+). I would appreciate anyones input.
Thanx!

My diesel Excursion averages around 16-17 for my wife who drives it 20 miles to work and back.

My diesel F250 averages 15-16 120 miles a day to work and back.

With the winter blend fuel of the north you'll get worse MPG than say running #2 in the summer.

OK, never mind.....someone here filled it on me and didnt fill out the log book. Sheesh do I feel stupid!!! But I still love the machine! It really is strong. It likes to stutter pretty hard after 10 or 15 miles like its got a few cylinders that arent firing! It dont like to start either with out a quick sniff of starting fluid. Its like a cocaine addict or something.

Any ideas on the stuttering?

I don't know what the shutter is but I wouldn't use starting fluid in that thing at all!! Hot Glowplugs + highly flammable starting fluid = toasted motor and flash burned face. not cool.

that shutter kinda baffles me. couldn't really tell youwhat it is. does it wanna die then catch itself, or does it make a noticable audiable noise. try to draw more of a picture for us all.

By shutter I mean that it feels like it is only running on 6 cyl instead of all 8. When you accelerate, it really struggles to get up to speed and just causes the whole thing to vibrate badly. It didnt do it until I filled it lastnight and restarted it to leave the gas station. ( i know i put diesel in it)

The starting fluid thing is only when you first start it after a few days of not running it, after that it starts fine for the rest of the day.

DO NOT use starting fluid! You will destroy the engine. If it is hard to start in cold weather, you probably have a problem with the glow plug system. The stuttering sounds like you got a bad tank of fuel (water in the fuel). May just have to run it through. Add some deisel clean to help it along. When the tank gets low, change the fuel filter and refill the tank from a station that sells a lot of deisel. GO THROW THE STARTING FLUID IN THE TRASH NOW!
