Problems with Overdrive
I have a 94 Explorer Limited with a 4.0 automatic 149000 miles. My overdrive wont kick in at highway speeds. This only happens about 50% of the time. I do alot of highway driving, and the other day this happened when i jumped on the highway. I had her all the way up to 65 mph and about 3000 rpms NO overdrive. I pulled off the highway turned off the car started it back up a min later and jumped on the highway and overdrive kicked in. I have been noticing the trend when it wont kick in and i stop somewhere turn off the car, then get back in start it up, and get up to 55 mph she works fine. I check the trans. fluid it does not need any fluid no leaks nothing.

3-4 shift is electronically controlled by the EEC-IV computer. 1st thing to do would be to determine if the problem is in the computer control or inside the transmission. Start by getting a wiring diagram and running the EEC-IV self tests (see tests at www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html).
