If people call me Matty my blood boils. Dont ask why. The only person alive that may call me that is my mother, and she knows not to do it with others around.
I was born as Matthew but go by Matt. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY (not even my girl) gets to call me Matthew except my mom. And now that I'm 28, I don't get into too much trouble with her anymore to where that happens. People usually don't second guess me or hassle me (in person) about my name, I'm 6-3 and about 225lbs. I'm sure some clowns on here will though... But don't think I won't take a drive!!! heh.
I introduce myself as David, not Dave, for a couple of reasons. First, Dave conjurs up an image of the guy in the greasy coveralls that used to clean the windshield at the service station (those over 40 know what I'm talking about). Not that that's a bad thing, I just prefer not to be identified that way. Second, it's a test to see how closely someone is paying attention when they meet me. Also, it's a sign of the level of respect someone has for others by remembering the name they prefer to be called. Of course, all this doesn't apply to my family. They call me what they've always call me.
I agree. If I introduced myself as Kenny, I expect to answer to that name. Not Ken, Kenneth, or Little Kenny.
My middle name is Matthew, so for me it doesn't really count since nobody really knows it. My first name is James. When I was younger relatives and my parents called me Jamie. At some point I decided that sounded like a kids name so I went by James, which sounded older to me. I don't have any problem with people calling me Jim or Jimmy.. but when I introduce myself I say I am James. Some people get it, some don't and automatically call me Jim. Odd. To this day the only people who still call me Jamie is my relatives, which is fine.. I think I tried to correct them once and simply gave up and not let it bother me.
Robert is my given name, which is fine in a more formal situation. Bobby to my friends. Bob sounds too much like a used car salesman or something to me. My one uncle calls me Bobby Joe, but never, under any circumstances can ANYONE call me "B.J."
My name is Matthew as well.....i think it's personal preference....I don't care if someone calls me Matt, my girlfriend sometimes calls me Matty when she is feeling playful, its still Matthew when I am in trouble with my parents.
The only thing that bothers me is when someone asks me if it is with 2 T's or 1.....I have never met anyone who only uses 1 T to spell Matt or Matthew.
I prefer last name sort of stuff. With 3 Craig's in one class, it's bothersome to keep answering to someone who isn't calling on you. My last name's Baker, and that's what I've been since the longest time. Only 2 or 3 of my closest friends call me Craig.
My given name is William, altho most call me Bill or Will, (I do have many other names I cant mention here.. hehehe) Most people just call me Taz...Dont EVER EVER EVER call me *****. The only person to call me William anymore is my mom or dad when they are PO'ed at me, and since I'm 33 dont dont happen much anymore
I think its all personal choice as to what to be called
No one ever calls me Andrew, except for my mon & dad. Everyone calls me Andy. I met a girl a few years back who insisted on calling me Drew. I found it mildly irritating.
My brother does call me Butt-Head. It's a term of endearment. (grin)
As to the Matts and Matthews, has anyone been counting how many we have here? I thought there was only four or so, but it looks like there's at least a dozen if not more.
My name doesn't have a shortened version, but people always called me whatever they wanted...i don't care. My friends used to call me by my last name in highschool and middle school (as well as all other kinds of nicknames outside of Justin), but now that i'm older and am in college people call me by my first name (i'm 20 now). I don't think much of the whole "respect" issue regarding it....i think of it more as a way to associate with a particular person. I guess nicknames are different then Matt/Matthew, but calling me by my last name vs first name is similar I would say....
If I was named Matthew, and someone called me Matt, i wouldn't flip out or be insulted, i'd correct them if i felt the need to if i prefered Matthew, but I can't seem to understand why people would be that offended by it if it happened....maybe you guys are annoyed with it by now and I simply don't understand because I havn't experienced it? Typically, I'd say people might slip and call someone matt instead of Matthew, not in a way of disrespect, but in a way of that they don't understand (like i dont) how it's that important to the Matt/Matthew they're speaking to.
Yeah, people can call me Matt or Matthew. One guy calls me Matty, just goofing around. My parents call me Matthew. My friends call me Matt. My wife calls me "SEXY!"
