Ok just came back from the mechanics shop and looks like a front diff isn't the only problem. Rear diff pinion bearings are shot, bearing and seal on transfer case shot, bearing and seal on trans shot. I need to replace both front and rear diffs along with some bearing replacements.
I cannot find a closed knuckle diff for my truck. I have found lots of 3/4 ton diffs from various years. 2 1978 3/4 4x4 parts trucks have what I need.
What I need help with is everything to swap over to these 1978 diffs. I also have power steering from '78.
My truck is a 1971 f-250 4x4
I know I have talked of this before but now I am doing the work in my driveway and need guidance.
Can the rear diff swap out with no modifications? Brake lines and all that?
Will driveshafts fit?
Will brakelines on front work with new diff, I have a proportioning valve?
Will spring perches line up or will I have to cut and move them?
Will my old steering shaft fit onto a '78 steering box?(I do have the help of a machinist if needed)
I hope to get all the answers I need so I don't have to harrass the forum anymore and take up space where someone else may want to post.
I thank you all again for the patience and support you have given
Adam
Adam, you will have to move the spring perches in,leave the old perches on the housing and weld on a new set.Personally I would get a new u-joint knuckled shaft, they make turning easier and help tighten up a sloppy system. Thats about all I can help you with, good luck.
