The cables that hold my tailgate up snapped over thanksgiving while I was unloading a motorcycle, and the dealer apparently gave me a set of cables with the wrong diameter hole on the tailgate end. When we tried to install 'em, we found this, but we also found that the bolt that secures said cable into the tailgate won't thread into anything. My dad said he heard something clunk and fall when he removed it, so we tried to find a way to take the tailgate apart and fix it, but we couldn't.
I need to find a way to fix this, since I really don't want to have to replace the entire unit, since my truck's been painted before, and nothing would match, not to mention the added costs, especially during this part of the year. Is it possible to take the tailgate apart successfully?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-Dec-01 AT 01:06 AM (EST)]I had the very same problem with my 88 and after alot of frusion i finaly just drilled (4) hole in the area of the latch and then cut a square piece of sheet metal large enought to get a nut in there (on the back side), a jig saw works good. then i put on one of those "diamond plate" tailgate covers on, to cover up the holes that were cut out. hope this helps :+
