Hi i was wondering how I could get some power for a fairly low price out of my 86 b2 4x4 with a 2.9L. Also it would be nice if it was fairly easy to install. Thanks
i dont think that you will get too much power out of a 2.9 without spending some $$$. this is only my opinion, but if you are looking to free up a little power then concetrate on the intake and exhaust. go ahead and remove the resonator like you said you wanted to do in the other post, maybe consider a cat back system. possibly a flowmaster or a turbo muffler. i wouldn't go ant bigger than a 2 1/2" pipe for the 2.9 or you will sacrafice low end power. as far as the intake goes you can simply install a k&n for about 40 bucks, or you can atempt to fabercate a custom cold air intake. if you look the stock one is restrictive where it goes into the core support behind the grill. maybe take some large diamiter pvc and heat it up so you can form it to exit under the front air dam and put a cone filter on it. you can also try to get a couple of xtra degrees of timming out of it. this may give you some power, just make sure the engine doesn't ping! lets see, if you're not concerned about mileage then you could always try putting in a cooler thermostat, it may fool the computer into dumping more fuel, i'm really not sure if it will make any more power though, i'm just giving you some ideas that have worked on some other cars. the bigger throttle body that people swear by didn't seem to help me at all, but then again maybe the gain was too slight to feel. you can also get rid of your stock fan and run a good electric fan. this will typicaly free up 5-10 horsepower. however dont use a cheap 10" fan from autozone or pep boys, you're better off going to the bone yard and findind a factory one off another car that will fit, or that can be fabbed up. there is also always headers...they are about $200. well anyways hope i helped out a little......good luck!
If you want the look of CAI, you can get a 95-99 Dodge Neon air intake, and it comes off the TB, right over to where the airbox is or "was". I would recommend cowl induction or fender snorkle if you plan to take it offroad, but Ram air can also give you more power. Something like for every 6-7 degree drop in temp, you get 1% more HP. You can also get headers, Pacesetter and Hooker (i think) have them for the BII's, if you get them, make sure you specify 2 or 4 wheel drive. You could set your timing 12 degrees advanced but use at least 89 octane fuel, unless in NM or Western TX, and then you use like 90 or something like that. You can insall a MSD blaster TFI coil, and MSD 6-Al ignition. That costs a little bit of money though. 8mm wires, and aftermarket computer chip. Jet makes one that I know of, TRS says Superchips does too, and I think our sponsor motorhaven has one from Diablo Predator or something like that. Diablo also has the custom programming for the chips, but these are kind of expensive also. You can also get 19 lb injectors for a 5.0, and install them. And a 16" electric fan to keep things cool. Another thing you could do is put in some new gearing, 4.10's are a good upgrade from the stock 3.73's.
i have invested in my b2 quite alot
here is what i have done to my b2 maybe i can give you some idea's
port match uppper and lower intakes, heads as well. free floating rockers, with aluminum rockers(lifters). felpro head gaskets pacesetter headers 2wd and 4wd are the same .
i have a 40 flowmaster split-rear dual setup 2.5 outs, jet chip, msd tfi coil and ignition box msd-6al,aluminum billet distributor 8.8mm wires bosch platinum 4 plugs distributor cap and rotor msd, high output alt, ramair setup with matching hood scoops ,i didn't go with elcetric fan i went with a flex-a-lite fan with a custom made spacer i have a small 6in fan for extra cooling ,also have a combo tranny and oil cooler in front of rad , 4.0 radiator look for auto type . modded a4ldwith shift kits, 4.10's ,58mm TB shaved the butterfly in the tb just a little maybe that helps you out some .
well for me not much since me and my old man have done all the work and oldman works in a machine shop but if i were to buy everything i had put in it's about 1,500 so far still daily driver
think about it i beat out a 5.0 on the street just the other day still with the 2.9L
sorry but a 2.9 liter could never beat a half way decent running 5.0 302. it would have to have at least a couple of dead cylinders to loose to a 2.9. it really dont matter what you do to a 2.9, its still a pig unless its charged or your spraying nitrous. even then a 2.9 aint all that.
try me lol you can put nos but you'll be killing the engine.
nos is not for 2.9ls i don't have a pig like you mention lol
if you don't know how to drive can also affect who beats who
it's not all car think about that. if you take care of your 2.9L well and not abuse it
like most people do it will treat you well.
i would know about the 5.0 since it's my buddy's 5.0 and i helped out putting in a new 302 from autozone into that engine bay with all the works cams, shift kits,etc...
not every 2.9l is the same not everyone can drive either. but hey everyone is entitled to their opinion.
maybe you could beat a 302 mustang off road up a hill, but in a heads up street race it aint going to happen unless the stang is toying with ya. what do you estimate your 2.9 is running in the quarter mile?
sorry man i don't street race nor do i care too (potential killer) .
people think they can just get in front of you just becuase they think they can
try me and you'll get 6points and a nice ticket for your trouble you might get a have a nice day from me too.
i use my b2 once and a while for mudding here in the everglades but that's it
