Now this Performance Muffler Shop i went to said that if i do a dual out (Ture Or Not) on a 4.2 V6 it will sound really ricey. They also said if i go to a 3inch outlet it would also sound ricey. I figured to ask the people that know. So, Is there truth to this?
Just got a muffler quoted Flowmaster 50 Series Single out 2.5 inch @ $150 installed and Flowmaster 40 Series Single out 2.5 inch @ $140 installed.
How are these prices?
(I posted this in a different thread. 4.2 manster and low responded, i just thought this subject should have its own thread.)
When I first got my truck it had a (I am assuming by the loudness) a 40 series flowmaster 2.5 dual out..dumped right after the muffler. I was a tad loud so I had dual piped ran out the back with 3.5 inch tips. Sounded ricey over 2000. Could not stand it. Did a muffler swap to magnaflow..same setup. The sound was less ricey and more mellow. I finally had the pipes cut off and had the magnaflow dumped dual out after the muffler..It sounds good untill I hit those higer rpm's. Then it sounds like a strainin 6 cylinder..go figure..I have heard rumers of some people having a dual out muffler with one pipe going out like the original pipe..behind the passenger side wheel with a tipe, with the other pipe turned down after the muffler. I wonder how that sound?
I have a dumped 40 series flowmaster. It's definately not ricey from 0 - about 3000 RPM's, but when you wind up our 6 banger the riceyness will come out a tad. Countless times I've said it...it's a 6, not an 8.
Now by ricey are you people talking about a raspy sound? Mine is not raspy at all, FM40 dumped.
But, as I have mentioned a million times before, it's definitely not an 8. it doesnt go bloog bloog bloog like an 8, i just goes booooooooooo like a really, really deep big block 4 cylinder. that's the best way I can describe it.
Big Block 4 cylinder...thats a new one...The v6(more this one)will never have that same sound as a v8. I have only heard a handful of v6 that have that sound. These are with ported heads and headers. The closet was a 96 Gmc Sonoma singe cab pickup lowered. 4.3L Vortec V6 5 speed. It had a single flowmaster dumped right after the muffler with four inch pipe. Yes I said 4" . I must say that truck was pretty quick....and loud...Cameron
Today while walking through the parking lot i heard 2 tacomas that sounded pretty "bloogy".....I can't imagine how a tacoma can sound like that, with our 6's being a whopping 4.2 liters.
Anyhow, I always attribute it to the fact that we are running 4 cats, and most other 6's probably don't. When i get my magnaflow hi-flow's i'll be sure to let you all know what the improvement is, I'll get a sound clip online or something.....
I have true duals and 2.5" pipes with huge 4" x 18" tips. It sounds pretty deep and aggressive at all RPMs. The reason our 6’s sound different than the V8’s is that we are even fire motors. Two cylinders always fire simultaneously so you more-or-less get the sound of a three cylinder engine vrs eight staggered exhaust pulses in a V8. No muffler or pipe combination will make our engine sound like a V8.
bobcoop, that's about the stupidest thing I've seen on this forum...as well as pointless. What on earth did you even post that for? If you're not going to be civil here, don't be here.
