i have recently bought an f-150 xlt, with a 4" rancho suspension lift. besides this, i am almost positive everything else is stock. so i was wondering two things, what type of axle is in the back, and what kind of gears i am running. i already know that the front is a D44 ttb but i dont know about the rear. if it helps at all, the truck is a 5-speed.
thanks a bunch!
F150's used the Ford 9" rear axle untill around 1985-ish, then they went to the Ford 8.8". The 9" has a removeable 3rd member housing that comes out of the front of the axle diff housing and the rear cover is welded on. The 8.8" is a conventional axle with a bolt-on sheetmetal cover on the back of the diff housing.
For the ratio, look on the axle information tag attatched to one of the diff cover bolts, or find the axle code on the VIN/weight sticker on the driver's door. You can look up codes in the 'tech articles' section of this website (link is in the upper right corner of this page), under 'decoders'. From memory, code 19 is a 3.55 ratio with an open diff, code H9 is a 3.55 limited slip.
