What type of atf should be used in 4r100 in a 2002 crew cab 7.3 4x4 also what is a good torgue converter to use in this truck, I will mainly use it empty but will sometimes tow an enclosed car trailer putting on a lot of miles quickly over several days of steady driving. I also tend to be an aggressive driver at times, (pedal to the metal). I am also considering a chip, possibly a hypertech as someone I know has one and is getting rid of the truck so I can get it cheap. Not sure if this helps to figure out the application on the converter or not?
Ford Mercon 5 or Castrol Synthetic. The OEM TC should be fine. Chip does not matter as for as the trans. You will burn a bit more fuel with a chip.
NNNNNNOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! do not use the Mercon 5, Use the straight Mercon, in your 2002 PSD. Use that Mercon 5 and you will be replacing it. The PSD produces way too much torque, the 5 cannot take it.
Come back to the 7.3L page the V10 guys will screw you up. They have different needs for their trucks.
I changed mine to Mobil 1 synthetic at 30k and noticed better tranny shifting. 18 quarts of the stuff is not cheap but well worth it IMHO. I have a 5.4 with a auto.
Use whatever is recommended in the Owner's manual. Look under "capacities" or "transmission fluid". If the truck's running fine with what it's had in it thus far, don't deviate. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
I did not mean it as you guys are out to screw any one up, sorry. What I was getting at is that his truck is a diesel so he needs diesel advice not to be screwed up by confusing with a non-diesel may be saying is right for their trucks. Sorry for the confusion.
Didn't do anything to Mobeys tranny untill 141,000 miles (cept check the level 4 times) so the stocker should be fine!! At that point I had the tranny and coolers flushed and I had Mobil 1 Syn put in!! Haven't checked it sense, 185,000 miles now!!

Nothing special about a diesel tranny from 99 to 02. Gas and diesel all used the same 4R100 and they all get the same type of fluid which is Mercon. Don't use Mercon 5.
