I'm pretty sure the diesel tranny has better planetary gear assemblies. I think 6 pinion instead of 4 for OD. Same fluid either way.

Question

I also posted this same question on the BD power site and had a bd tech reply that mercron 5 is the fluid to use or a synthetic fluid,(AMZOIL) were his exact words, I have read that amzoil is not a good choice, this has me really confused, hope someone can make all this info clearer, maybe someone with personal experience or a tech from a trans shop who deals with this kind of stuff every day. Thanks

My owners manuel specifically states "Do not use Mercon V"

My owners manual says the same thing. Mercon, NOT Mercon V. It also advises against dual purpose fluids. I'm running synthetic.

What kind of synthetic are you using and how long have you been using it, any noticeable differences from regular mercron? advantages/disadvantages?

Mobile one. I didn't do a complete flush, got about 14 quarts in. Just swapped it a few weeks ago. Put in a hughes tranny pan which added a few more quarts. It runs cooler now, but mostly becuase of the tranny pan. Shifts about the same. I don't think it's really related but I'm working on a record tank of gas. Took a 150 mile trip which helps. So far it looks like I beat 16 mph. Set the cruise at 65, try to stay out of the way... At the end of that trip, half empty, half with 1200lbs in back on hilly terrain, my tranny temp was 130, about 65 outside.
