Somehow water got into the engine of my '80 F-100 and now it makes a terrible knocking noise when starting. I've pulled the plugs to try & dry things out. Any suggestions? Any permanent damage possible? All help is appreciated.
Water into what? Your oil? Check to make sure there's also no oil in your coolant(radiator) You say somehow....do tell. Is this a a 4x4 that you've recently had in the water for a day of off-roading? First things first, CHANGE your oil and filter. I'd recommend warming the engine at idle for about 10 minutes, and then pull the drain plug and leave it sit over night that way. Flush out the bottom of the pan with some diesel fuel(through the oil fill, with drain plug out) just before leaving it for the night. This should get the maximum amount of any water out of the oil. Buy some cheap off-brand oil, and a filter, and fill it up again, run it for about a 20 minute drive to get it up to operating temps, and change it again. You should be good to go at this point, providing this isn't a cracked block or head we're talking about here. If this was an off-road excursion, you'll want to change the diff's, trans and t-case fluids as well as re-pack the wheel bearings. Part of the maintenance required for playing in the water.
If you haven't played in water, you may have a blown head gasket or a crack in the water jacket (cooling System passage in the block).
If this is the case, it is probably time for a rebuild. It may be regardless if the water has been in the engine for any length of time especially while running.
Water interferes with the lubrication properties of the oil and causes damage to the bearing (cam and crank). You may soon see a drop in operating oil pressure if you haven't already.
Now I'm told that the water is not the issue... Well maybe... The knocking may have been coming from the starter. FYI the possible water came about from wet sanding the hood during a paint job...and not paying attention and allowing the engine compartment to get very wet... nothing fun like off-roading. Thanks for the info. You are appreciated.
