when i first start the truck in the morning it will surge up to about 2300 and drop down to almost stall then go up and back down,it has cut out once or twice.
after a few moments it will settle down and idle at 1000 then drop to normal idle.
any thoughts..
It might be the MAP sensor. A defective manifold absolute pressure sensor may cause a rich or lean air/fuel ratio, excessive fuel consumption, and engine surging.
I had the same problem about a year ago. I am 99% sure the thing you want to check is the MAF (Mass Airflow). 1st- disconnect the wires from the sensor and remove the two torx screws to remove the sensor itself. Be careful cause there is a small wire filament inside, this is the culprit that has been building up some sort of deposits and causing your problem. Now get some air intake cleaner and spray it on this wire, this should remove the grime-but if it does'nt, spray again and use an extremely soft bristled brush to gently rub the grime off (Be careful). Make sure everything is dry before you re-install. Let me know the results.

Brake cleaner is a better cleaner for the heated MAF wire. Will not leave any residue. The heated wire is VERY delicate, I do not recomment using a brush on it, or touching it. Oily residue will cause it to go nuts & send all sorts of mixed messages to the ECU.
