Does anyone know where to get a manual for a 1951 Ford flathead engine. I need to look up proper procedures on adjusting the valves. I hear that I would need a special tool also, is this true?
Thanks
Joe
Check out the Parts Shop link above. I believe they have the shop manual. Believe it or not, your local library might have the book in the reference section.
Normally you won't find adjustable valves in a flathead. Maybe somebody was hotrodding it, so it's possible but not likely. If it does have them, the special tool allows you to hold the lifter in place and use a special wrench to adjust the screw in the top.
Check out ebay on stuff like this too. Even if you don't buy it there, it is a great picture resource from time to time.

Putting in a set of Johnsons was SOP at many purely stock rebuilders of the era; time is money and Johnsons were cheap. If it was a truck it may have got a Merc crank/pistons also. Now you know why I prefer scrounging the old trucks!
As far as flathead books, Speedway Motors has a nice selection; from bland to wild.
Thanks for all the info. This engine was rebuilt by local rebuilders. No one would touch this engine and it took two rebuilders to finally get it done. Supposedly they installed adjustable lifters?? Of course, now neither one wants to warranty anything. THE FRUSTRATION! It runs good, but it has a miss that cannot be adjusted with timing alone. It has a pop at the exhaust, so that's why I figure the valves need to be adjusted. I welcome any help!
Suggest you get some books to familirize yourself with the beast and then join us on the Ford Barn. Adjusting the valves can be a royal pain so check the easy stuff first.
