I just purchased a 99 f150 with 99 thousand kilometers. All the maintenance receits are in the glovebox from day 1. The oil has been changed every 5000 k as recomended, however there is a tick in the engine that reminds me of a bent lifter. I know the previous owner and I know he would not have run the truck hard. Am I going in the wrong direction here or could the noise be something else?
I also had a spark plug come loose, and it made the worst ticking sound. Let your truck cool, and then check the plugs by taking the wire's off one at a time, and gently try to wiggle the plug. Also, if there is a spark arcing somewhere, it will tick. Just unplug your underhood light, and raise the hood at night with the engine running. If there is a spark, you should be able to see it. Just some alternate ideas.
In response to the tick in your v6, I have a 99, and it has had the "tick" since I got it new. It sounds like an exhaust leak, it also sounds worse when your next to a brik wall or some area where theres an echo, I wish someone could explain what it is.
You may just have the same ticking noise that is common with this engine. Mine has done it since day 1 and now has 102,000 miles. It is the oil relief valve or oil pressure relief valve, can't remember exactly what it is called now. Do a search in the 4.2 forum. You'll find the question has come up before.
