cavitation = erosion of the block from the outside of the cylinder wall to the inside. Caused by detonation of the fuel making tiny bubbles bounce around and keep picking little pieces of the block away until there is a tiny hole leading into the cylinder. Best to install coolant additive - found in many diesel shops - that is supplemental to dca control. Go to Caterpillar, Cummins or International shop, NAPA store and ask them for a bottle and some test strips.
Cavitation really doesnt have a sound, just that you see or smell antifreeze burning at the exhaust pipe. Anti freeze smell or sight is not always due to cavitation, sometimes it is from a blown headgasket.
The fix is most probably having the cylinder bored and sleeved.
what is it and what does it sound like, better yet how do you stop it??
Sounds like.............if the quantity of coolent entering the cylinder is sufficient to hydrolock, the next compression stoke could be the beginning of the end of that motor as you know it.........
I have heard $100 a hole, I would do all 8 although some only do the one bad one which makes no sense to me. The cost of new rings, bearings, pistons if needed etc will of course raise the price to a much higher level.
What is the cost of having the cylinders sleeved before anything blows?
If its not already cavatated then its of no advantage to sleve it.Get the test strips and maintain the coolant additive. You wont be out any $$$ and it may never need to be sleved.
The test strips are used to check the amount of coolant additives, just dip the strip into the rad,a color chart comes with the strips, match the color the strip turns to the closest coloe on the chart.Yes its coolant in the cylinder, caused from the cylinder pitting on the coolant side.Look at bilders reply,he explaines how it happens.Sleving will not stop cavatation, however testing and maintaining the coolant sca's will.
