My local dealer has a 2004 X(XLT) with the 5.4 V8 (17,000 miles). They had it listed at $35,000 and now is down to $26,000. It has an axle code of C2? Not sure which axle that is. I have a 2000 X(XLT90,000 miles) with the 4.30 rear-end and V10. I dont really need the towing capacity(will be used as family hauler) and am wondering if the price is right and would I see a substantial increase in mpg. I am getting 11 around town and 13.5 on highway with the V10. Also would there be a huge decrease in performance? Thanks for any help. Also what would be the towing capacity of the 5.4?
thanks
Go for a test drive. Take lots of people and load it up. Then go out to the steepest nearby hill and see how well it goes up the hill from a stop.
Only you can tell if it is fast enough for you.
I doubt that you are going to see any significant increase in MPG. If fact, it might go down a little. that 5.4 is going to have to work a lot harder than your V10 to keep up with your driving style.
BTW - A Ford dealer in Houston has a new '04 XLT 5.4. They are only asking $28k.
Also, check out Hertz used cars. Hertz uses 5.4 X's in its rental fleets around the ski areas out west.
I have a V10 X with 35s and my friend has a V8 X stock and we get about the same mileage. He may drive harder than I do but his wife is the main driver and he said he gets about 11 in the city and 13-14 on the road. He was very surprised to hear that I got the same mileage. At that time of discussion, my overhead computer said 10.8 and his said 10.6. Granted it is the overhead and not actual but they should be equally off. I would not think that you will see any increase in mileage. F150 get a little better mileage but they weigh a lot less as well. An F150 carrying the additional weight the X has gets closer to 12 as well. My dad's F150 always has 12-1500 lbs in the bed and gets 12-13 in town.
My 2000 Excursion Limited is a 5.4 V8. It is a ok engine for here and there. I wanted a V10 or a Diesel but at the time when my poor 93 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4X4 took its last breather. I couldn't find any used Excursions in the newspaper at the time I needed one.
I've towed with it and it did real well. (I even hit 90 mph from Dallas Texas to Oklahoma City towing a car trailer with a 83 Coupe Deville Cadillac on it. passing cars here and there. I keep forgetting this boat is not even v10 or a diesel. Now here is the catch... It did terrible going on small hills when towing. My rpms jumped from 3000 to 4000 real quickly.
With out towing I did in the City 11-12 mpg and on the highway 13-14 mpg. Like jschira said, "Only you can tell if it is fast enough for you." For me its not fast enough but it can get up there, just have a lil faith

Reason: grammor error
If it's a 4x4 with the 5.4, the towing limit is 7200 pounds.....with a 4:10.
C2 is a limited slip 4:10.
That rear is reason that it can get moving from a stop as it's alot of weight to get moving.
For around town, it may be fine, but with 4:10s and towing on the highway, I think you'll be taxing it pretty hard, Heck, my 351 Bronco tows 7000 pounds...and you know it's back there.
Fuel mileage won't be much better as th3 5.4 will be working hard, but it sounds like a good deal for what you want it for. That fact that the price has dropped is probably because mos will want more engine.
I own two 5.4L gas Excursions and am perfectly happy with both of them. They are both 2004 and do everything we ask of them. They are both "family haulers" (and our family consists of four people...none of which are the "average" size!) and we have no problems with power at all. We have taken them up steep hills, although we haven't done any off-roading as of yet, and had no problems.
As for the gas mileage question, yes you probably will get slightly less gas mileage that with a V10 or diesel for the reasons already stated. But not a significant amount and since driving an Excursion is basically thumbing your nose at OPEC anyway, I don't see a real issues here.
All in all, I think you will be happy with whatever Excursion you get...it will all depend on the deal you get from your dealer!
justmyluck,
I went to trade my 03 ex in just today. I have a v10 eddie bauer loaded. i have all the options with a dvd player. The trade in money they are showing me scares the hell out of me.....if your looking for a super nice truck im only about 1hr from you....maybe we could help each other out.
I don't know what the market in Cinci is, but I see '04 EX's limited with the V-10 all day long here for around 26,000. All the buttons and the DVD to boot. They have about 25,000 miles on them(on average). As far as the 5.4 goes, it should be fine but my motto is "if they offer bigger, that's what I'll get", there's nothing more annoying than finding out the truck you have can't haul what you need, but could with the bigger engine. just my $.02.
I've got a 2002 4x4 5.4 XLT, it works great for me. I just put a Borla exhaust on it a month or so ago. I towed an enclosed 14' trailer with it around town and a bit on the highway. Not sure how it does on the hills, we have no real big ones here in Michigan. Although for the Thankgiving weekend travelling through Pennsylvania, the X had a total of 6 passengers with the rear loaded to the top. Had enough power, got around 14 mpg.
