I just finished my 460/c6 swap into my 74 highboy. I am now working on converting it to P/S steering from manual. I have a ford p/s bracket. The problem I am having is trying to find a lower radiator hose that drops down far enough so that my p/s belt doesn't rub on it. The truck also has a 3" body lift. I know people out there have to have this same combo. What have you guys used for a hose? I think the body lift is skrewing me up,because the radiator sits 3 inch's higher then normal...anyways PLEASE HELP!! I am sick of manual steering!!!
Drop the radiator down so it is re-centered on the engine. This makes the fan shroud fit correctly also. You need a fan shroud for proper low speed cooling. This will also make the transmission cooler lines fit and it will clear up a bunch of other problems. Don't forget to make sure the radiator and radiator support is sealed properly or the engine will not cool properly on the highway.
I am not having any cooling concerns. She runs a constant 180 deg. I have thought about dropping down the radiator, but I think it may look bad. I may look at doing that if I can't find a hose to fit. I was looking in a summit book and saw a steel flexible hose that may work. I am about to through this p/s conversion in the trash!!
I have just finished the same project on my "mud" truck (3" lift, 460 w/ PS). I droped the radiator down 3" and used a lower hose for a 79' 2WD truck w/ 460 C-6. Had to cut the hose about 2" at the water pump outlet to fit my truck. Seems to work great so far. -Ed
I used generic hoses from Pep Boys on my custom radiator. They come with extra length on the ends you can trim to fit and are accordian shaped with springs inside. Make sure the bottom one doesn't rub on the oil pan to block corner area.
why not cut your hose about 4 inches from the water pump and add a piece of the appropriate sized steel tube(I.E. small piece of exhause pipe) into the exsisting hose so that the bend of the hose is lower and can clear the belt, i had to do that in a pinch when my lower hose broke and the only parts store didnt have the right hose....it was on my truck for two years before i changed it out.. just make sure you clamp it good.
