Hello, I am having a starting issue with my 86 F-150 5.0L V8. It intermintently starts hard. It cranks and turns over just fine and will eventually start. It does it sparatically , so it is making it hard to figure the problem. I have checked the ignition sys, coil resistance is ok , there is spark , cap and rotor ok. I have checked fuel , both the main pump and in tank pump are ok. I have replaced the ignition module and coolant temp sensor and did not help a bit. Does anyone have any advice. Also i have been hearing that you can check codes on this truck . How and where do you do this. thanks Jordan
The code checker is sold at any auto parts store and at Wal-Mart etc. They are about $30-$35 or so.
The plug to check the codes is on the fender well. It is a triangler shaped plug with another single wire plug right next to it. Once you get the code scanner, you will be able to see the shape of the plug you are looking for.
Hard to say what is causing your problem so a code check would likely be the best starting point.
Is it choke related? I just went through a hard start problem that turned out to be the choke. My choke is electronic and was not adjusted properly after a engine swap.
i have the exact same problem , i replaced the starter and battery , but it still happens . more help please mine happens ot be a 1986 f150 4x4 with 351
