well, I've got an OLD motor, well it's not MINE, but neways, from what I hear it's a 255....it's got what looks to be an external oil pump or something?.....the rockers are on a shaft like the Ford FE motors, it is a V-8, goes to a 55' Crown Victoria.....the intake doesn't make the top seal for the lifter valley, there is a pan thing for that, the intake looks like a big X, for lack of better words....do any of you guys know if it IS a 255?.....and if it is, what type of motor is this?, it's def. a small block tho.....I figure U may know cuz I know that Y blocks, are sorta like FE's, and they're OLD!
The correct motor for the 55 would be a 272 or 292. Since it is a Crown Vic many buyers went with the 292 "Thunderbird" engine which included a 4bbl and duals.
The 256 was a 54 Merc engine and also used in 54-5 F600's. However all Y blocks swap.
Best way is to ID the block casting by going here:
well then what could it be?....it's small, it's got the rockers on a shaft,. instead of ind. pedistol......and it's OLD.....it could be a V-6, haven't seen it in a WHILE.....but I didn't think they made V-6 way back in the 50's......
The carb attaches to the intake with 3 bolts, Ford used this setup with their V8's from 1934 to 56, Mercs from 39-48, Lincolns 34-48.
1934-mid 37 were Strombergs, late 37 was Chandler Grove and the rest are Holley's or Ford built.
Thats the history lesson for today.
Leadhead, if your story under the line "Carnage of the Year" is true, you probably shouldn't mess with antique engines, just the ones that Auto Zone can easily access with their computers.

Looks like everyone has helped you out here, there's a 256 yblock, but the 55 Crown victoria was mainly 292 Yblock for those cars, unless someone changed it. Well gang, i'm tired out on cars and pik em up trucks this evening, i think i have a different appetite tonight for something i had all the time about 32 years ago, burgers, fries and a darned shake, hahaha, im serious..Janet
