Would there be any benefit from removing the second cat and leaving the first on?? I dont believe theres anything wrong with them. Would there be any performance/sound gain?? I already have a performance high flow muffler /w a 3" tip. Its got a rumble, but I would like more and thought that removing the second cat would make it louder. OR SHOULD I LEAVE WELL ENOUGH ALONE??
I wonder the same thing.... Whats the deal with 2 cats anyway? I'm pretty sure it will make a sound gain. Oh well, mines coming off soon....maybe tomorrow
I think the first one is a pre cat, not sure what that means. If ya do rip it off, lemme know how it sounds and if you notice any power/mileage gains. Just hope it dont stink !! What about the air pump, maybe we could rig it into a little supercharger .
I was led to understand that each catalytic converter is better able to focus on a certain form of emissions, but I don't know for sure anymore. Anyways..the precat just Y-pipes and doesn't clean up the emissions quite as much.
Sooo, I STILL haven't took it off..yea I know, I'm lazy. Anyways, while looking down there, it looks kinda tricky. After the air tube connects to the pipe, the pipe kinda 'flattens' then goes back to normal, then enters the second cat. So, i'm gonna cut it off RIGHT when the pipe enters the second cat. BUT, that big-horizontal-frame-bar-thing is kinda in the way. (I dont know what its called, but it goes across the bottom of the truck).
It's kinda tricky since I will be using a saws-all. lol. And the local shops won't do it soo...
The second one doesn't have as much surface area for catalytic conversion, as well as no air injection for the system either. The second one is the primary one. You might stink, you might not. Mine doesn't..which is odd. Generally, you'll be stinky.
Mine has only the first cat on it...second one was cut off when I got the pickup. I'm pretty certain it makes it considerably louder without it. My buddy has a '96 and had both cats straight piped, and mine with one cat and a FM 40 was considerably louder. I'd say remove it...can't hurt anything. It'll sound much better IMO.
Oh well if it smells, it already does lol. Yea, I had straight pipe and both cats and its not loud at all. The second cat does look like the main one. The first one might do a little conversion, but it looks like it just y-pipes.
There is always Catco converters on Ebay for cheap, I was thinking about either replacing the second cat with it or taking both out, putting on a y pipe and a high flow cat. With the high miles on my truck, I dont think it will hurt anything, cats are prob not as efficient as they used to be
.
I pulled the second cat off my truck a couple years ago and I'm impressed with the sound. I have no muffler and it's just a pieced together system so it surprises people when they hear my truck. I'd say its just right for loudness too. Rip the cat off IMO.
Any tips on easy-removal of it? Did you use a torch? Saw?
I just took my second one off....and it was a pain w/o a Sawzall. I used an angle grinder with cutting disc for most of it. It helped to undo the manifold so I could twist and move the pipe around. Either way it took a lot longer than it should have. I'm pleased with the results though. Right now I have 1 cat. going into 2.5" pipe, 18" glasspack. It then splits to dual exhaust, with 4"x24" tips. With that second cat on it sounded pretty "ricey" but after I took it off the truck hasa bit deeper sound. Sounds pretty good when I get on the gas. It also helps that my G.P. is probably burnt out by now.
Argh!, I got the sawsall out today and *tried* to do it, but theres no room down there... The frame rail is in the way, and I don't want to cut the pipe where the Air Pipe goes in. I actually went at it better with a hacksaw, but I got tired sooooo, Im just gonna torch it off. Stupid cat....lol
