It justed started this morning. I have a 1999 POwerstorke SD. It seemd to happen more at the shift point but also it seems to be happening when i decelerate at high speeds. It almost sounds like a blow off valve or a belt slipping. IT seems to be coralated with the tranny. All my gauges are good, my fluid levels are fine. The noise really scares me. It sounds bad. Like a screching almost. Any help would be great. Any questions that I can answer thaT would help you I will do my best to answer. Thanks

I was riding with my parents the other day, and their 03 7.3L was doing that too. It's an insanely loud and high pitched screeching/whistling noise that happens during acceleration at higher rpm's (2500-3000 rpm). The noise can be duplicated while driving, or while in park and reving the engine. I tried listening under the hood, but it is so loud I can't tell where the noise is coming from. I'm talking ear piercing loud. They said that people look at them funny when it happens on the road, so others on the highway can hear it as well.
you could blow a belt , and generaly it will happen at the worst time, like 2am in the middle of nowhere.., the pulley could break and fly off and damage the radiator etc.....generally the replacement parts cost is about $ 100 or less plus price of a new belt...which is recomened.
also check the alternator too it could be goin south on you too .
thank you very much for the info. I am new to the powerstroke world and I am trying to learn as much as I can. I like to do my own work if you know what I mean.
I recall there is a vacum pump on the PSD's, my 95' PSD launched one, and I had some fun stopping it with a load on it of course., But not sure about a belt driven oil pump, other then the power steering, I thought it was gear driven also. Better find someone that know's for sure.
It is okay to remove the belt, and no the oil pump is not belt driven. Isolate the noise by removing the belt. If no noise check your idle pulley, air conditioner, if it is the vacume pump you will be finding out soon when you hit your brakes...........
ahhh i think this would be a good time for me to zip it and sit back and learn.
could you give some more info on this....
well i didnt know for sure about the oil pump drive. i wish i new more about my psd. i learned alot about my dodge i had at one time. simply because i had to work on it all the time.
