Wow, I have learned a crap load just from listening from you guys. Being my first diesel, should I add something to the fuel every couple of tanks or is this just a overkill. My dad has a 7.3 and runs no additives, flleet and farm oil (cheap ****), and the thing has like 100+k on it and it purrs like a kitten. Are the 6.0's more sensitive or something?

Sweet03cobra,

Fuel additives are up to you. I don't use them always, but now when the temps can be 60+ today and 20+ tomorrow, I put in 16oz of Power Service prior to topping off the tank. Remember I will let my Excursion sit in the driveway for a week or two at a time before it moves again. Never know what the temp will be when I decide to head out again, so I figure this is a good preventative measure against gelling. Winter is the only time I use an additive, and then not every tank. Summer I don't use it. Good luck with your new diesel, you will love it.

Well winters aren't winters in abilene texas so I guess I'm good to hook. I'm excited to drive it, I'm in baghdad right now and I don't get home for a while yet. I had my dad keeping an eye out for a good deal on a 04 while I was gone and he found one so it is sitting in a shed awaiting to be used. I guess I should have him put some crap in while it sits over the winter ah?

frame-mounted Horizontal Fuel Conditioner Module (HFCM).
The HFCM acts as a primary fuel filter/water separator which removes
both water and impurities from the fuel. The engine-mounted fuel filter
and the HFCM filter should be changed at the recommended service
interval. Refer to the Scheduled maintenance guide section of this
manual for more information.

It is on page 4 of the owner manual diesel supplement.

I would read the diesel supplement. It's full of good info.

SB I have bought the power service diesel fuel polishing kit, and have installed it today. I really had no way of knowing that the hose I used to siphon the junk off the bottom, was actually all the way on the bottom. Anyway, nothing but clean fuel came out (clear tubing). I don't think my tank is really that bad anyway, but we will see soon enough. The power service in the gray bottle will maintain your system if it has not already had a growth started in it. The kit was $41 at west marine, they stock power service polishing kits at almost all their stores. The kit I bought is good for 100 gallon systems, so I divided all the increments by 4, so you actually get 4 treatments form the kit.

I am going to top the tank off later today, and take another drain off the HFCM and see what comes out.

Well drained the HFCM again tonight and got a little less than what came out of it last time. I must have some kind of growth in there. Sure hope the power service fuel polishing kit works. We will see in the near future.

so crap actually grows in the diesel tank? Why does this happen in diesel and not in normal gasoline engine tanks?

Just a guess, but I bet all the nasty toxic fumes that are emitted by gasoline would kill any algae that would otherwise try to take root on any water in the fuel. The diesel algae seems to be able to cope with the oily environment though.

The way that it was explained to me is that the alge lives in the water in the tank and eats the diesel fuel.

If you take away either the water or the fuel, the alge can't live.

So if you keep your tank full to help prevent condensation and use an additive every now and again you should be OK.

That was what I heard from a fuel broker that I know, but couldn't tell you if it is true or not, but it sounded reasonable to me.

Well, I have called almost every auto parts store and the one big Sears store here and they all say no 36 mm socket. I have gone by two local small Sears stores and they have none. I am going to have to call NAPA I guess in a minute and see if they have one. If not, then I guess I'll be round trip driving 80 miles to the said large Sears store to see if they REALLY do not have a 36 mm. What is going on here? My Wally world has no SD filters. Can't find a socket. Must be living wrong.

Thanks, Tim. I may try that. I just called Advance Auto and they claim to have a 36 mm socket--I'm going over now. Figures, it's always the last place you look!!!

Sears has the socket - you can look it up on sears.com. It's possible a smaller store wouldn't have it, but I bet they do. I literally had to drag the guy with the cabinet key over by the ear to get him to unlock the cabinet so I could get the socket. "We don't have any that big." Yes you do, I was just staring at it behind the glass, please just come open the cabinet." "No, really they don't go up that big." "AIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!! Comeopenupthiscabinetyoufreakingmoron!"
